The Sherman Oaks Library before the landscape renovation.

Eric Shaphran, 16,  and over forty members of his Sherman Oaks Eagle Scout troop, a handful of friends, relatives and adult leaders of Troop 139, devoted over 300 hours to the latest Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project  at Sherman Oaks Branch Library on Moorpark Avenue.  It was  completed recently after months of planning and preparation and more than two days of work.  Volunteers weeded, tilled the soil with mulch, installed boarders and re-landscaped the front of the library. At the end, they even scraped close to a hundred wads of gum of the brick entry and power-washed it.

The project was planned, developed, organized and executed by Eric as part of his leadership development requirements for earning the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America.

Volunteers devoted 300 hours to Eric Shaphran's Eagle Scout leadership project.

Project inception was July, 2008, and detailed planning began in the fall.  The landscaping plan for the library was designed to be drought and heat tolerant and low maintenance, long before the city contemplated the present drought and water rationing.  The project was reviewed and approved by both the Los Angeles Public Library and City of LA Recreation and Parks Landscape Maintenance Department, which cares for the library’s grounds.  The project was funded entirely by private contributions from friends, neighbors and members of Eric’s Scout Troop.

“I am glad to finally have it done after months of planning and preparation and working everything out with the city.   It’s a great feeling to have been able to accomplish this for the Community. Thank you to everyone who supported the project by contributing and working on it”,  said Eric, who is will be a senior at Oakwood School, and is an “A” student and member of the Student Council, Chorus and Choraliers and Co-Captain of the Baseball and Cross Country teams.  He passed his Eagle Scout Board of Review on June 29 and will be presented his Eagle Scout Award at a formal Court of Honor in the very near future.  Eric is Troop 139′s 153rd Eagle Scout in its 55 year history.

Troop 139 meets on Monday nights at 7 pm at the auditorium at St. Francis de Sales Parish.  For more information about scouting and Troop 139, contact Scoutmaster Guy Himber at guyhimber@aol.com. (Photographs by Richard C. Fleming, II)
