Sherman Oaks Sunset Rotary begins new year

The 2009-2010 leadership team of the Rotary Club of Sherman Oaks Sunset took office on July 1.

Serving as President is Mel Powell, a Rotarian since 2007 and a Charter Member of the Club, as are all of this year’s officers and directors.  Powell served as Chair of the Service Projects Committee since the Club chartered on October 19, 2007, and will also chair the Public Relations Committee in 2009-2010.  He also served as the 2008 President of the Sherman Oaks Chamber of Commerce.

Don Turner, the Club’s founding Treasurer, becomes the Club’s President-Elect and will chair the Service Projects Committee.  Turner served as President of the original Sherman Oaks Club prior to its merger with Studio City, leading that Club in 1989-90 and 1990-91.  He joined Rotary in 1987.

Angela Clair is the Club’s new Vice President, having joined Rotary in 2007.  She served as the 2005 President of the Sherman Oaks Chamber of Commerce.

Nancy Schmidt, the Club’s Charter President, takes on the responsibilities of Club Secretary and also carries the title of Immediate Past President and will chair the Membership Committee.  A Rotarian since August of 1987, she is a Past District Governor, serving Rotary District 5260 in 2001-2002 as its first female District Governor.  She served as President of the Rotary Club of North Hollywood in 1990-1991 and 1992-1993, and has served as the President of the Rotary Club of Sherman Oaks Sunset since its inception in 2007, encompassing two terms.  She served as President of the Universal City-North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in 1988 and of the Sherman Oaks Chamber of Commerce in 1992 and 1994, and was the 1996 recipient of the prestigious Fernando Award, the highest award for volunteerism in the San Fernando Valley and one of the top awards for civic accomplishment in the United States.

Joe Love, having joined Rotary in 2007, is the Club’s Treasurer.  He has served as a Board Member of the Sherman Oaks Chamber of Commerce since 2006.

The three at-large Directors are Connie Cashin, Sondra Frohlich, and Joan Wismer.  Cashin has just completed her term as the 2008-2009 District Governor, and served as President of the Studio City/Sherman Oaks Rotary Club in 1995-1996.  She is a Past President of the Sherman Oaks Chamber of Commerce.

Frohlich, who will chair the Administration Committee and served as the Club’s founding Secretary, is a two-time Past President of the Rotary Club of Studio City/Sherman Oaks, serving in 1996-1997 and 2001-2002.

Wismer will continue in her role as Foundation Committee Chair, joined by Cashin as co-chair.
