A small strip of Toluca Lake was alive with “Viva Italia” on July 19 when Pergolina celebrated an exclusive collection of paintings and masks by artist Sergio Boldrin with a full house of guests. Famous for his mask art and historical shop in Venice, Italy, Bodrin is currently showing a collection of 35 paintings, 48 large masks and 100 small masks at the well appointed Riverside Drive store.
Paulanna, who owns the charming shop known for its unique and often imported gifts, decor and accessories, hosted notable guests, including Bud Cort, Joe Mantegna and daughter, actress Gia Mantegna, Dan Lauria, Meshach Taylor, Peter Gurski, Paul Feig and Joe Mascolo.
” I am so excited to be showing at Pergolina in California because I love being exposed to the culture. The warmth of the landscape, the climate, the people… it all influences my colors and my energy. It excites me!,” effused Boldrin. “It reminds me of the experience of being a child and seeing a toy for the first time, it holds that same strength of enthusiasm. ”
Paulanna originally discovered Boldrin’s work at Fest d’Italia Santa Monica in 1994 when he had just begun to introduce his masks to the United States. Boldrin is known as most famous living Venetian mask artist in the world. He and his brother Massimo own La Bottega dei Mascareri, a tiny shop at the foot of the Rialto bridge in Venice.
Boldrin’s mask art became world renown when it was featured in the 1999 thriller “Eyes Wide Shut” featuring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
Pergolina sells Boldrin’s art exclusively in Southern California.
“It is an honor for Pergolina to host the Los Angeles premiere of Sergio Boldrin’s paintings. I have always loved the painterly flavor of his masks and to see that same quality in his paintings is breathtaking. When his work fills the walls of Pergolina, I feel as if I am on the Rialto,” said Paulanna.
All paintings and masks by Sergio Boldrin are signed and available for purchase at Pergolina through August 30. Pergolina is located at 10139 Riverside Drive, Toluca Lake, CA 91603 818.508.7708, www.pergolina.com. Prices range from $40-$1,500. Pergolina is open Monday-Friday 10:30am-6pm, Saturdays 11am to 5pm.
