Photo services these days have mostly gone the way of online photo sites, some local chain markets and pharmacies, and one-hour shops. Gone are the days of personal photo service where you can actually talk to someone with knowledge about photo processing and cameras.

Remember the landmark Studio City Camera, the local Ritz Camera and the iconic Fotomat?  All gone. One of the only remaining photo/camera businesses still standing in the San Fernando Valley is Valley Photo Service located in North Hollywood — and it’s been fulfilling the needs of the professional and amateur photographer since 1952.

Just opening the front door will make you forget what decade it is. However,  since technology has truly changed the face of the photographic developing and camera business, Michael Perrin, who has owned the store since 1977,  has had to change too.

How has he remained in business through all this change? “Be diverse, stay ahead of the curve and hope for the best,” he said.  And give heartfelt customer service, of course.

Perrin and his staff offer many unique services to satisfy customers’ needs with a  staff that includes a computer expert and a professional photographer.   They  specialize in photo and video restoration as well as video transfers. Digital processing is about 25 to 30% of their business today, and depending upon how many photos you are printing, can actually save you money because printing out photos on a home printer often uses a great deal of ink.

Do you have to make a video for a special occasion and all you have are print photos that are too time consuming to scan?  No worries.  Valley Photo Service will do a “Shoebox Scan.” They’ll take 100 prints (up to 8”x10”), scan them and put them on a disc for $32. (If you do this on line, it could cost up to $60, or at a nearby printing chain, $2 a photo). It’s the  perfect way to organize and save those photos that are just sitting around.

Valley Photo Service continues to sell film and develop photos shot on film.  Perrin recently placed an order for 500 rolls of Kodachrome color film for his customers who still prefer film.  They sell dark room supplies, repair and sell cameras, and can do large format printing.  He also supports student photographers, having donated 40 single-lens cameras to various colleges last year.

In the community spirit, Perrin’s door is always open for advice.  It’s good to know when your  digital camera breaks, you need photos scanned in a hurry,  a photo custom framed, a new passport picture for your trip to Chile, or you just found a tattered photo of your grandmother, there’s still a neighborhood place that can help you out.
