Tucked into the northeast corner of Ventura Blvd. and Beverly Glen, across from the Sherman Oaks Library and behind  Handy J’s car wash is an art studio, theater class, party place, supper club and business retreat all rolled up into one.  Art Rebel, open since January 2009, is a “multi-functional clubhouse” with a completely unique, imaginative twist.

Art Rebel was named

Art Rebel was named after James Dean because the last photo taken of the legendary star was at a gas station adjacent to where Art Rebel stands.

“It’s all about people reconnecting and connecting with their creative self, ” said owner Ponti Lambros, a Sherman Oaks native.

After years working as an investment banker in London, Lambros returned to Sherman Oaks with a different mindset. His wife Sabine Abadou is an artist, as is his grandmother. Ponti encouraged his wife to start painting again and while she painted, so did he. His paintings now hang in some top Hollywood collections. (Benicio Del Toro is a fan.)

Interior

The sky is the limit for all the usages possible at Art Rebel.

Lambros found this new hobby so enjoyable that he wanted to share that experience with others. The idea for Art Rebel started in his  garage and has led to the 1,800-square-foot space in Sherman Oaks which enables him to bring the arts to people of all ages.

There’s always something happening at Art Rebel — and eclectic is the name of the game.

Weekly art classes include watercolor, cartoon character drawing, Mommy and Me classes, and a multi-media class featuring drawing, acrylic and collage.

Lambros hosts special events for couples (such as “Love Art” which includes champagne, chocolates, flowers and art) and families (“Art Rebel Family” in which all members can participate on a project).   He claims “there’s never been an argument in this place.”

Kids party

Kids parties and Family parties are popular.

In addition to visual arts, Art Rebel offers theater arts taught by Tim Hillman who was the Theater Director at The Buckley School for years (some of his students include Matthew Perry and Rashida Jones).  Newly-formed drama workshops focus on teens and transitional actors.

Secret Suppers and Paint Dancing (the next is one is October 2) are two examples of unique Art Rebel events.  Secret Suppers are held monthly and include a three-course meal, wine pairings, music and  an  art project which you can take home. Each month features a different menu.

Last month, the Artisan Cheese Gallery of Studio City co-hosted the dinner and was so successful that they will be back for this month’s dinner on October 22.

“The dinner is served at a long, communal table. We’re trying to bring back a time when people gathered to sit and talk in a salon style with people they don’t necessarily know,” explained Lambros.

Body art

Getting creative with body art.

Los Angeles Paint Dancing co-hosts monthly parties at Art Rebel, teaming all types of music with paint, brushes and paper. This is a chance to have fun, get messy, meet new people and do something different.

Art Rebel is a unique venue for a birthday party, business team-building activity, a Bar or Bat Mitzvah party or any event. The space transforms beautifully and there is overflow room in the parking lot. Be sure to check out Art Rebel’s Halloween events — there’s  plans for a family-friendly haunted house.

Interesting valley history fact: Lambros came up with the name Art Rebel because James Dean was photographed filling up his Porsche at the gas station adjacent to the location. It was the last photo taken of James Dean before his tragic accident. Ponti named  his business in honor of the “Rebel Without A Cause” star.

The Secret Underground Dinner Salon evening is $60 for a three course meal, including drinks, and followed by an art project.
