Sherman Oaks’ Farm Boy: Fruit, vegetables, fro yo, sushi, Asian specialities and more

Years ago, I lived in New York City and earned very little money in my first grown up job. I searched out cheap eats and often ended up buying food from the small, relatively inexpensive, fruit and vegetable markets that lined my street corners. The produce was always fresh and the selection was plentiful. Flash forward to 2010, and although I now live in Studio City, whenever I shop at Farm Boy in Sherman Oaks, I experience deja-vu.

This family-owned fruit and vegetable market has been tucked away in Sherman Oaks for 12 years. I thought this was a little independent market, but I recently discovered that Rick and Kim O and their family own five Farm Boy markets, three locations of Yogurt Farm (a sushi and yogurt shop) and Tokyo Grill (there’s one in Sherman Oaks Westfield Fashion Square mall).

I told Eugene O (Rick and Kim’s son) that Farm Boy Sherman Oaks reminds me of the shops in New York, except there is no salad bar. He said their stores are modeled after New York’s corner markets and that the other branches have salad bars because they are larger. Although the Sherman Oaks location is the smallest Farm Boy, Eugene said it’s the busiest.

Farm Boy Sherman Oaks is filled with fresh fruit and vegetables, dried fruit (like figs, pears, and pineapple), Korean specialties, nuts and candies (from flavored licorice to delicious chocolate gummy bears). There is also a good selection of fresh flowers. Farm Boy buys “the best of the best” according to Eugene. They get better quality produce because they buy smaller quantities. Their prices are lower than the traditional super markets because overhead expenses are lower.

Farm Boy is filled with dried fruit, Korean specialties, nuts and candies.

The produce selection is unique and varies with the seasons–on my last visit, I found baby bananas, Rainer cherries, coconuts, Mexican papayas, lots of different berries, red and green grapes, and tons of melons. Veggies included heirloom tomatoes, okra, baby squash, kale and rapini. Self-serve tart frozen yogurt is sold by the ounce ($.39). It is made fresh with Trader Joe’s organic vanilla yogurt and flavored with produce from Farm Boy. Eugene knows the secrets to making frozen yogurt (I won’t tell you where he used to work) and it’s great!

“Originally, my favorite thing about Farm Boy was their amazing fruit and vegetable platters (small $25, large $30). You can not beat the price and the quality. I introduced a ton of people to this and my sister-in-law even drives from the city to pick them up,” said customer Lani Kreshek said.

“Then they introduced yogurt and sushi. The yogurt is amazing and makes for a great after school treat for my kids and their friends. They choose Farm Boy over Baskin Robbins and Menchies all of the time. They can serve themselves and pick fresh toppings, all cost by weight, without the craziness of a yogurt store.”


Roses are $1.50 a stem.

In addition to homemade sushi, Korean specialties include egg rolls, thinly sliced beef for grilling, Bibin Bap (steamed veggies with hot sauce and sesame oil) and Chop Chae (a seasoned noodle dish made from sweet potatoes).

There are so many items packed into Farm Boy, you’ll always be able to find something for a quick meal, party platter or healthy snack.
