At certain times, especially when it involves food — is when you just have to make your way out of the 818. The occasion is the LA Street Food Fest tomorrow — Saturday, February 13 at the LA Studio Center in Downtown LA. Consider it a giant Valentine to the food truck love rolling around the streets of Los Angeles these days.

It’s an outdoor festival featuring over 35 of the best food trucks around, including: The Buttermilk Truck, The Grilled Cheese Truck, Sweets Truck, Fresser’s, Frysmith, Cool Haus, Get Shaved, Slice Truck, Flying Pig, Fishlips and Komodo. It’s “pay as you go” (cash only) for special sampling menus priced $1-$5.

The big news? Chef Ludovic Lefebvre, the Top Chef Master contestant, former executive chef of L’Orangerie and Bastide, who’s been popping up at restaurants all over town guerilla-style, will ‘pop up’ at the Festival, serving his famous fried chicken in bite size pieces — in a truck for one day only.

There will be street food off the truck as well with street food vendors from Boyle Height’s Breed Street scene, plus Rodolfo’s Barbacoa, Hello Lupe’s Pancakes, the Monsieur Egg Cart, and North Hollywood’s Antojitos Carmen.

Also, on the street — wine and beer will be available on a donation basis to benefit the LA Regional Food Bank; make DIY valentines for free; live entertainment; have photos taken at the Oh! Snap photo booth.

Interested in shopping? Check out the Valentine’s Marketplace featuring local designers and artists with jewelry, clothing, baby items, gourmet edibles, art, plush dolls and more.

I want to go, but must teach all day on Saturday. I’ve encouraged my teen students to go so I can enjoy this nosh fest vicariously. We need to consider hosting this event in the SFV, maybe at CSUN or Valley College and include some sort of fundraiser?
