Krekorian’s office gives status on Mulholland washout and closure

On Saturday, February 6, a portion of Mulholland Drive was consumed by heavy rains that washed out a one mile stretch east of Coldwater Canyon.

In response, the office of Councilmember Paul Krekorian has been working closely with city, state and federal officials, and residents in the area to ensure the impact to them is reduced to the greatest extent possible.

“My staff is working aggressively to minimize the inconvenience for residents and drivers in this vital connection to the Valley and City,” Councilmember Paul Krekorian said.”We will work hard to find the best and most efficient fix to this problem as quickly as possible.”

Engineering officials described the incident as a washout, not a sinkhole, as has been inaccurately stated in some media reports. The soil washed downhill during the weekend rains, causing a portion of the pavement to collapse in the westbound lane.

Councilmember Krekorian’s office and city officials are now working closely with the California Office of Emergency Services and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to secure a source of funding to respond to this incident.

The actual repair should take about two weeks after funding is secured and plans are approved.

If residents have immediate concerns or questions, they can call 3-1-1 or the office of Councilmember Paul Krekorian, (818) 755-7676.
