Breakfast and lunch rules at EAT

If you are going to name a restaurant EAT, it had better live up to its name. That’s the first thought that crossed my mind as I entered the NoHo eatery. After quite a few subsequent visits, I can honestly say it does.
Stepping into his small café/diner on Magnolia, you instantly feel a kind of straight up no frills New York edge mixed with a bit of San Francisco boho cool. Sleek and simple with friendly service, there’s an open kitchen and counter seating with about a dozen small tables filling the floor. There’s also patio seating in front and on the outside alley.
Open for breakfast and lunch only, the extensive menu is a major surprise. There’s the usual suspects of omelettes, egg dishes, pancakes, sandwiches, burgers, salads, wraps and more, but they all have a bit of a twist and portions are all very generous. Take the EAT Deluxe Scramble, for example, with three eggs topped with sautéed mushrooms, tomato, onion, spinach, cheddar cheese and a choice of mixed in bacon or sausage and topped with jack cheese — there’s nothing missing ($8.50). Or the Golden Gate Burger with sautéed mushrooms and onions with swiss cheese and avocado on thick grilled parmesan sourdough bread ($8.95). Burgers are handmade with special seasonings and are made fresh. A special Mediterranean Chicken Sandwich came on lavash bread packed with chicken, sundried tomatoes, feta cheese, spinach and red pepper aioli. All sandwiches come with a choice of fries or side salad. Breakfast items with eggs comes with bread and choice of fruit, hash browns or Ned’s Shreds, which are shredded zucchini prepared just like hash browns. Order them for a change of pace, just make sure to ask for them prepared well done or else they are a little soggy.
If you’re in a decadent mood, try the Flap Jacks, with such choices as Oreo Pancakes (often a special), Chocolate Chip, Banana Nut Caramel and Hawaiian (with pineapple and coconut inside and out.
Coffee is good with that strong diner flavor. A surprise is the hot chocolate topped with a generous swirl of whipped cream and drizzled with rich chocolate.
Lots of good eats at EAT. Go hungry.
