Give Peace A Chance at the 8th Annual Roots & Shoots Day of Peace Eco Festival

HAPPY NEW YEAR: Ring in the Jewish New Year at The Laugh Factory’s Yom Kippur services. Owner Jamie Masada has been opening his doors for FREE on the High Holy Days for 28 years. Kol Nidre service is on Friday, September 17th from 6-8pm Saturday, September 18th at 11-1pm and Neilah 6-8pm. A complimentary “break-the-fast” nosh will follow. No contributions are accepted and tickets are not required. Make sure to arrive early in order to be accommodated indoors. In the event of overflow capacity, TV monitors will be provided outside on the sidewalk on Laurel Avenue. 8001 Sunset Blvd in Hollywood, two blocks west of Fairfax. Limited parking is available around the corner in the Laugh Factory parking lot on Laurel Place. FERRIS AND FOOD TRUCKS: The Outdoor Cinema Food Fest presents Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in Exposition Park on Saturday, September 18. Bring a picnic or choose from ten food trucks, including The Greasy Wiener, The Munchie Machine and The Slice Truck, that are rolling in for the occasion. HUNGARIAN FEST: Join celebrity guest hots Cynthia P. Romo and Bela Lugosi Jr and help celebrate the culture of Hungry at Maxmilians Rose Garden and Lot on Sunday, September 19 from 11am-5pm. GIVE PEACE A CHANCE: Dr. Jane Goodall’s 8th annual Roots & Shoots Day of Peace Eco Festival is happening on Sunday, September 19 from 11am-4pm at the Santa Monica Pier. Don’t miss the Giant Peace Dove Parade at 2 pm — flying more than 50 hand-made giant doves (each with a 25-foot wing-span; made from recycled materials)! It’s a free family-friendly environmental celebrating United Nations International Day of Peace, activities will include live music; celebrity appearances, pet adoptions, food drive for people and pets, environmental exhibits, activities for kids of all ages. Hundreds of kids (members of Dr. Goodall’s global youth program “Roots & Shoots” from throughout California) will display their year-long environmental projects. GET INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY: Join the first of two planned Neighborhood Council Summits on Sunday, September 19 from 1-5pm. These meetings will allow residents the opportunity to personally shape the future of local empowerment through neighborhood councils. Councilmember Paul Krekorian, Bong-Hwan Kim, General Manager of the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment (DONE)and Al Abrams, President of the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners will present followed by residents will share their own vision regarding neighborhood councils before a series of breakout sessions to discuss, among other things, neighborhood council ethics, fiscal issues and what the future holds for Neighborhood Councils in Los Angeles. The Marvin Braude Constituent Service Center, Conference Room 1B, 6262 Van Nuys, Blvd., Van Nuys. The workshop is slated to last from 1 to 5 p.m.
