Have you ever had that experience where you look in your rear view mirror and are startled by what you see? Every line and pore is suddenly magnified and a decade seems to have been added overnight without permission? Or that your skin appears so dehydrated that it looks like it needs an infusion from a fire hydrant? Well, I have. Okay, perhaps I was overtired that day. But, nonetheless, like some fortuitous karma bombshell, I heard about a new facial treatment called Dermafile — and now, after one time, I’m addicted. I was surprised by my results — smooth, rejuvenated skin without swelling or redness.  And now, over a week later, I’m still incredibly pleased. Even my teenage kids noticed. That says it all, doesn’t it?

Tina K. with Kirsten Dunst (during a photo shoot for VOGUE), who has been a client since age 12. Kirsten's mother, Inez, is now Tina's business partner at Belle Visage.

Let me state for the record, I’m not one to fall for beauty treatments or fancy products. I have sensitive skin, so I stick to the basics, which actually has suited me fine all these years. Plus, I’m also as skeptical as I am practical. So, when I heard about Dermafile, an exfoliating treatment that is ideal for sensitive skin, that sounded like more than just a pampering treatment, I felt compelled to try it out. After all, rear view mirrors don’t lie.

The only place Dermafile is offered locally, as far as I’ve researched, is Belle Visage in Studio City.

Tina K. has owned Belle Visage, a full service spa (medical and nails too) for men and women, since 1994.  Her first location was at Moorpark and Woodman, but by 1997 her business grew so rapidly that she moved to her current location on Ventura Boulevard.

Tina is known as a celebrity facialist, but keeps a low profile for the sake of her clients’ privacy. The actress who led to her star following is Kirsten Dunst, who at age 12 came to her because her skin was so badly damaged from the make up used in Interview with a Vampire. Kirsten’s mom, Inez, was so impressed with Kirsten’s results that she and Tina became business partners in 2005.

Tina, who has a warm, engaging personality and gentle hands, is exceedingly passionate about her life’s work and bringing new treatments to Belle Visage.  She brought in Dermafile as a natural, non-invasive skin exfoliating and skin polishing treatment which  involves the use of a different sized files made of stainless steel and a finely crushed flat layer of cosmetic diamonds. No chemicals are used in the process.  The Dermafile treatment is offered for 1 1/2 hours or 1 hour. Below, Tina answers questions about the treatment.

Q:  What are the simple steps of the Dermafile Facial?

A: 1. Cleanse facial make-up.

2. Apply a thick layer of cleansing gel on the face neck and chest.

3. Using the appropriate Dermafile tool for the skin type ( fine, course or body file), we begin to remove layers of dead skin by applying light pressure in circular movements.  We start on the forehead to gage the client’s sensitivity. Working counter clockwise, move down the face to the chest and back around. This needs to be done twice therefore the first round begins with the (fine) handle — if the skin isn’t sensitive, we upgrade to the course handle. I also get very close to the eyes for the lines that Botox can’t reach — the tiny light creases right under your lower lashes

4. Exfoliate the lips for chapped skin, to the eyebrows. Most people have a lot of build up inside their eyebrows. This treatments gets every crease without irritation.

5. Cleanse skin again.

6. Steam, massage, extractions, mask and moisturize.

Q: What is the difference between Microdermabrasion and Dermafile? Are the results the same?

A: The results are not the same but they are both meant to remove layers of dead skin. The only reason they aren’t the same is because I can get to all the targeted areas with the Dermafile where I cannot with Microdermabrasion. Also, Microdermabrasion uses crystals and suction; the newer machines also have the diamond head attachment which is where the Dermafile concept came from. The only difference is that because the Dermafile is manually done without the use of a machine that uses suction, we have more control over the treatment and the results as well. Sometimes with Microdermabrasion, you don’t know if the person will get irritated or if their capillaries will break. So the Dermafile is a better option for sensitive skin. People with rosacea can finally have smooth skin.

Q: How often do you have to keep it up?

A: Every six weeks. Skincare is a life long commitment. People take care of their bodies by working out and shop for nice fitting clothes but the face is what people see first. Every month you have layers of dead skin that need to be removed so you can look fresh and products can penetrate. Four to six  weeks is perfect for either the full Dermafile facial or the Dermafile mini which is the shorter version.

Q: What results should you see after one treatment of Dermafile?

A: Smoother skin. Your skin automatically glows the same day.

In addition to the Dermafile facial, Belle Visage offers a full line spa treatments with five aestheticians on hand offering all spa services, including a full menu of  peels, facials, waxing, massage and nail services. Unique to Belle Visage is their Galvanic Wave cellulite treatment.  The Med Spa employs a doctor who does Smart Lipo and Sclerotherapy vein treatments; three nurses on staff administer such services as Laser Hair Removal, Botox, Dysport, Cosmelan, Restylane, IPL Photo Facial, Radiesse, Mesotherapy, Sclerotherapy, Juvederm, Perlane.

Dermafile tools are flat with crushed cosmetic diamonds that are able to get places where other procedures can't.

Tina, who got her aesthetician license at 16, has  20 years experience in skincare.  She says her success comes from “building relationships.”

“I have many clients that still come to me from 20 years ago because I’m not one to make them purchase tons of product to reach my monthly quota,” she explains. “We really focus on the relationship we build with our clients. It’s important that we adjust their regimen on a quarterly basis since our skin changes every season. It’s team work at its best.”
