A Prohibition Trend? The Edison started it in a big way downtown a couple years ago, but it seems to finally be filtering into the 818. A couple months ago, The Local Peasant started the bandwagon with its “prohibition” and “pre-prohibition” mixed drinks. And now, with a target January 28 opening, is The Federal Bar in North Hollywood, which occupies the historic Bank building that housed Bank Heist which fell victim to a fire a few years back.

The Federal Bar is part of Knitting Factory Entertainment and will be a two level gastropub and entertainment venue. In addition to gourmet pub grub and micro beers, they promise to have top scotches, bourbons and an eclectic wine list.

Adding to that spirit,  I just noticed a soon to open  pub on Ventura Blvd. in Encino near White Oak — a black storefront  with a sign and a logo a la The Godfather with the words Prohibition Burgers and Beers. According to the website, which is not quite functioning yet (although there are nice food photos, but no phone number, email, and has a few strange spellings—“meet” instead of “meat” and missing some prepositions), it does say the soft opening will be happening soon.  Stay tuned.  The Federal 5303 Lankershim Blvd (at Weddington) North Hollywood (323) 839-6054. Prohibition 17620 Ventura Blvd, Encino.

Pop Up Takes Residence: Studio City’s Georgio’s Cucina , helmed by three star NYC chef Gary Robins, was a pop up restaurant only set to stay for a few months. However, embraced by the community, Robins has decided to stick around and will rename the eatery this February.

Get Juiced: Jamba Juice is kicking off the new year with a “three step program for feelin’ good” (they say).  Take advantage of three special offers on $2 16 oz. Smoothies, $1 Steel Cut Oatmeal and $1 Fruit and Yogurt Probiotic Blends. Through January 19. Click here for the coupon.

Retro Move: Café 50’s in Sherman Oaks moved from its longtime Van Nuys Blvd location to Ventura Blvd west of Kester. The new digs has a more modern, steel style.  Mark you calendar for the last Wednesday of the month from 6pm to midnight — it’s Pajama Night! Wear traditional pajamas (matching tops and bottoms) and eat for $3.50 from a special menu with a beverage purchase. Sweatshirts, T-Shirts, Night Shirts, Boxer Shorts, Long John’s, Scrubs, Night Gowns, Underwear and Bathrobes are not acceptable!  15045 Ventura Blvd. Sherman Oaks (818) 906-1955

Fast, Fresh, Casual: The Chop Stop just opened on N. San Fernando Blvd in Burbank. The theme? Chopped, of course! This fast casual eatery quickly prepares salads, wraps and soups with over 40 chopped ingredients of proteins, veggies, cheeses. Make it their way or customize it your way. 1001 N. San Fernando Blvd. #110 Burbank, CA 91504 (818) 846-3560 (just north of Burbank Blvd)  Mon – Sun: 10am-9pm.

More Burgers: In Toluca Lake,  on Riverside Drive, The Counter Burger is coming soon, replacing Koo Koo Roo.
