Dishing up specialty cooking classes in the 818

Select restaurants and cooking schools are having special classes and events coming up — from a Top Chef to Vegan, Cookies, French and Gourmet Kids — for pros, serious cooks and those who just want to have fun!

The Academy of Culinary Education in Woodland Hills is having an Open House for prospective students on Tuesday, January 18, 6:30-8:30 pm.  Chef/owner Cecila De Castro’s eight month Professional Cooking & Baking Programs are ideal if you are looking for a career in the food industry, already working and looking to improve skills, or are a serious home cook.  DeCastro is there working with the students and will teach about the pantries, flavors and cooking techniques of the major cuisines of the world.  The new session starts January 31. 4917 Topanga Blvd. Woodland Hills, CA 818-887-CHEF

Pinot Bistro’s Executive Chef Steven Mary will show you the inner workings of a French kitchen on Saturday, January 22 from 10 am – 1 pm. He’ll feature techniques on how to make four different desserts from one pate choux recipe, classic and new school derivate preparations of hollandaise sauce, coq au vin and bread pudding. The $90 per person registration fee includes a three course lunch (items cooked during class) with Chef Steven expertly paired with private label red and white wines. Interested in vegetarian/vegan/raw cooking? SunPower Natural Organic Cafe in Studio City is offering a class on Sunday, January 23, 3-6pm. You’ll learn five recipes as well as how to alter them to transform them into new variations. All recipes can be made using just a food processor and a blender. Included will be Mashed Cauliflower and Mushroom Gravy, Lasagna, tostada/nacho “cheese” and more. Includes large tasting plate.  $45 individual/$80 couple paid in advance, $50/$90 at the door RSVP a must to attend! Cook LA in Studio City has a variety of hands on classes this month covering an international spectrum using seasonal and local ingredients. Owner/Chef Liz Alexanian emphasizes healthy cooking in all her menus. Check out the rest of January’s  calendar for Pizza Night, Havana Night, Vegetarian, Moroccan Kabash and more.  Prices range from $60 – $75 for a three hour class, including food. Let’s Get Cooking in Westlake has classes for the home cook and those with professional aspirations. On January 25 at 10:30am and 6:30 pm, Alice Medrich  will teach from her new book, Chewy, Gooey, Crispy, Crunchy, Melt In Your Mouth Cookies. If you follow the Food Network’s Top Chef, you may want to take advantage of  learning some tricks of the trade from one close-up!   Fabio Viviani, currently from Top Chef Season Eight All-Stars,  and owner of  Firenze Osteria in North Hollywood, will take to kitchen with students in tow, and demonstrate how to make two different types of pasta in ten minutes.  The next class takes place on February 6 from 1 to 3 pm. Little Feet in the Kitchen Chef/Owner Jennifer Evans Gardner believes that kids ages 6-13 can cook and enjoy gourmet food. She’s currently running two after school series in Studio City. The first focuses on “white food” with a whimsical twist… meringue cookies and mini-pavlovas, white asparagus with beurre blanc, a perfect white cake, pizza bianca, cauliflower and truffle puree, pan roasted whitefish, white corn and crab cakes, simple white risotto and more! The second is the “Iron Chef Series” where students are divided into teams to compete with a new secret ingredient each week. Parents become the judges at pickup!
