Martin Luther King, Jr Day: Los Angeles Events Honoring the Man and His Legacy

Martin Luther King, Jr Day honors the birthday of the man who led the race for civil rights.  We commemorate  the life and legacy of King who stood for the betterment of humankind — for equality, courage, human rights, dignity, community service and social and racial justice.   Watch the most famous speech of his life during the March On Washington August 28, 1963. Also, listen to the speech Dr. King  gave at Canoga Park High School on January 15, 1961 titled “The Future of Integration.”

Following are a few events happening on Monday, January 17 in Los Angeles on Martin Luther King Day to honor the man and his dream.

LOS ANGELES KINGDOM PARADE: “Working Together We Can Make The Dream Come True” is the theme of this year’s Kingdom Day Parade which takes place Monday, Jan. 17, from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Over 150 floats, marching bands, drill teams and dance troupes will march down Martin Luther King Blvd and Western Ave, traveling west on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd to Crenshaw Blvd, south on Crenshaw Blvd to Vernon Ave with a festival at Leimert Park. Kingdom Day Parade Marshalls will be Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, California Attorney General, Kamala Harris Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, John W. Mack, president of the L.A. Police Commission, Calif. Senate Assemblyman Curren Price, the honorable Jean Frantz Theodat, Mayor of Taberre, Haiti, Assemblyman of the 55th District Mr, Warren Furutani, comedian Michael Colyar, Miss Kayla Thomas-Cole, Queen for the 2011 Kingdom Day Parade, Miss Brittany Hicks, 1st Runner up Princess for the 2011 Kingdom Day Parade and many more guests and celebrities. It will be televised live by KABC 7.

CAKE FOR KING: The California African American Museum will open their doors on the only Monday of the year for a special celebration on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  At 11am there will be film screenings and a hands on workshop led by Teresa Tolliver. At 1pm Victoria Burnett will be performing songs in the Gallery of Discovery honoring Dr. King’s legacy. Cake and cupcakes will be served at 2 pm. At 2:45pm there will be live excerpts read of past Dr. King’s speeches by Gerald C. Rivers highlighting Dr. King’s leadership in the American civil rights movement. THE AUTRY: School is out, but The Autry in Griffith Park is open on Monday! Join in on a museum-wide scavenger hunt with a special prize, a hands-on history lesson about African Americans in the West, gold panning, and specials in the Golden Spur Cafe. The event takes place on Monday, January 17th, 2011, from 10am – 4pm. For more info, www.theautry.org

LOS ANGELES COUNRY MUSEUM OF ART: As part of Target Free Holiday Mondays, visitors of all ages are invited to a free  day at the museum. On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, LACMA is open noon to 8pm. Enjoy a live performance with the legendary jazz group the Pan Afrikan People’s Arkestra. Performances at 12:30 pm and 2:45 pm. www.lacma.org
