Borders Closing: In another sad hit from the economy, Borders is closing 30 % of its stores nationwide, including Sherman Oaks and Glendale in the 818. A liquidation sale is slated to start today.

2011 NBA All-Star Jam Session: It’s a basketball lover’s fantasy with a weekend full of hoops-centric events. Participate in a session in which fans can shoot, slam, dribble and drive all day; watch an NBA All-Star practice and game. Los Angeles Lakers Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, as well as Los Angeles Clipper Blake Griffin, will serve as official spokesmen for the NBA All-Star 2011. Children and seniors, $12 to $20 per day; adults, $20 to $30 per day, Children 2 and younger are free. Jam Session tickets are available at the Staples Center box office, online at www.ticketmaster.com, 800-4NBA-TIX or Ticketmaster outlets. Los Angeles Convention Center, 1201 S. Get Your Compost: Free compost is available at Rancho Las Virgenes at the intersection of Las Virgenes Road and Lost Hills Road in Calabasas every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  This organic soil conditioning property aids water retention in light soils and helps to break up and aerate heavier soils, so less watering is needed. RLV Community Compost is available FREE OF CHARGE to anyone who wants to come and load it themselves. Bring your own container and shovel.

PRESIDENT’S DAY EVENTS

Presidents Day Celebration: It’s the 19th Annual Presidents Day Celebration at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum on Monday, February 21 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.   There will be fun for all ages — musical entertainment, storytelling, and presidential and first lady look a-likes. Hot dogs, pie and other all-American food will be available for purchase. Presidents Day activities are FREE.  Ronald Reagan Library – 40 Presidential Drive, Simi Valley.

Studio LOL Comedy School for Kids: What can be better than a laughing and happy kid?  Check out Studio LOL Studio City  for a special President’s Day Day Camp on Monday, February 21 from  9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students will learn fun comedy games and write their own comedic sketches. Family Day at The Autry: History comes alive at this museum of Western history. The third Sunday of the month is Family Sunday, featuring a special Western-focused craft activity (kids can paint their own masterpiece), story time, live music from the Western Music Association, gold panning, hands-on history tours with museum docents and opportunities to explore the Autry’s galleries.  Free with museum admission. Autry members are free; adults, $10; students with current ID and seniors (age 60 and up), $6; children age 3 to 12, $4; children under 3, free. Free for active military personnel and veterans, peace officers and park rangers, with current ID.  The Autry Museum, 4700 Western Heritage Way, Griffith Park in Los Angeles. Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Pajama and Pancake Skate Party:  Get an early start with the kids on Presidents Day with Woodland Hil Ice  with a PJ and Pancake Skate Party.  This outdoor ice rink is next to Westfield Topanga and features more than 7,000 square feet of real ice. The discount skate rate is $8 for skaters wearing pajamas, and participants get a free Beanie Baby. A pancake breakfast is available for $3.  If you can’t make it that day, the rink will be open through February 27. Target Free Holiday Mondays at LACMA: Day off with the kids? Trying to figure out what to do? This Monday is a great day to take the family to explore the Los Angles County Museum of Art. Admission is FREE and the art is priceless. Enjoy a live performance with the Bohemians. Performances at 12:30 pm and 2:45 pm.
