It’s the week of the Royal Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton. Join the celebration and have party of your own.  The one stop shop for British goods in the 818 is Oh, Fancy That! in Tarzana.

Located in the Tarzana Square, this small store is a gem full of British delights.  A replica of a red British phone booth stands in the corner as you enter. Need a plate, mug or kitchen towels as a royal wedding memento of William and Kate or a classic Paddington Bear?  Union Jack themed décor? Proper English china? Snacks? This is the place.

The English don’t have the greatest reputation for culinary cuisine, but there are specialties the British ex-pats crave, and Oh Fancy That is the place to which they all flock.

Pantry favorites include Marmite, a salty yeast spread; Spotted Dick (no, not what you are thinking, it’s bread pudding in a can); P.G. Tips tea; Ready Bric porridge; Weetabix; Birds Custard; Ribena (black currant drink); Cadburys (English candy); Walkers Crisps and Hula Hoops (potato chips);  Lucozade (energy drink);  Colman’s mustard; jars of pickled onions and Branston pickles (chutney). And not to be forgotten, the quintessential Heinz Baked Beans (used for beans on toast) and the Heinz Salad Cream, as well as Twiglets, marmite covered wheat sticks. A small frozen section includes a variety of imported meat pies, including steak and kidney.

Imported pantry goods from England.

Owner Jean Karasek is one of the cheeriest store owners you’ll every meet. She delights in talking about her products, and if you have a request, she’ll try and get it for you. Regular shipments come in weekly.  She’s always up for a “chin wag”  (chat) and you’ll be “chuffed to bits”  (pleased) with your British finds — so gather it up for the wedding on April 29.

There is another Brit shoppe in Sherman Oaks, The Friar Tuck Shoppe, where I go to find my favorite tea–PG Tips.

I agree. The Friar Tuck Shoppe may be small, but it’s very well stocked not only with canned goods and jars of jams and jellies, but unusual sweets and freshly made scones and other food products in their frozen section. They’re next to The Robin Hood British restaurant in Sherman Oaks.
