Tasty Tidbits: Restaurant News in the San Fernando Valley

Sandwiches take on the small plate trend at Nibble Queen in Woodland Hills —  a new sandwich shop with a European style.  Open for lunch and dinner, they offer topless sandwiches (open face), rolls and some sweet pastry treats. Sandwich fillers include deviled eggs, prosciutto and melon, smoked salmon, roast beef, pate, various cheeses, black forest bacon and herring.  Prices on these sandwiches range from $1.70 – $2.50, but don’t be fooled, you’ll have to order a few to get your fill. Open for breakfast and lunch. 21014 Ventura Blvd. 818-992-7444.

Two My Daily Find faves are hooking up. L.A. Creamery’s ice cream sandwiches will now be served at Umami Valli in Studio City. If you haven’t tried L.A. Creamery yet, check the stores out at Westfield Sherman Oaks and The Americana at Brand in Glendale.

In addition to Italian dining, Firenze Osteria has some interesting libation specials.  It’s Sangria Sundays 5 p.m. -8 p.m.,  Firenze label red and white wine for $5 a glass (bar only) seven days a week, Tuesday 2 for 1 tequila all night long, wine tasting and complimentary hors d’ouevres Thursday 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Happy Hour is Sunday through Thursday 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.

King’s Fish House in the Calabasas Commons is celebrating Maryland Blue soft-shell crab season with a special menu through September 1  Check out Southern Fried Soft-Shell Crab, Soft-Shell Crab Piccata, Soft-Shell Crab Tempura Style and a Soft-Shell Crab Sandwich.  The restaurant is also featuring Wild Salmon specials through September 15 and ongoing is a new sushi menu.

It’s lobster Italian-style at Buca di Beppo through September 11 with such offerings as Lobster Fonduta ($14.95), Lobster Fra Diavolo Pizza ($18.95-$28.95) and Lobster Ravioli in Rosa Sauce ($24.95-$34.95).

In another doomed restaurant saga, 8 1/2 Taverna in Studio City appears to be abandoned. The former Italian themed gastropub emptied out overnight a couple weeks ago without explanation. The location on Moorpark Avenue just east of Tujunga is one of those cursed restaurant spaces that can’t seem to house a successful eatery.
