Izakaya M: New Restaurant Concept from Midori Owners

Just when you thought the 818 has enough Japanese restaurants another enters the fray. Izakaya M, a new concept in Japanese restaurants recently made its way to Sherman Oaks. Owned by the people who brought Midori Sushi to Ventura Boulevard, this new restaurant is a far departure from the “all you can eat” model.

Izakaya M has a more upscale feel in a very modern, yet fun setting.  Music plays over speakers as Japanese mixes with Korean in this restaurant which also offers sushi and a robata bar alongside traditional dishes. Some of the Korean favorites are Kalbi BBQ ( marinated short ribs), Kobe beef (Bulgogi- marinated Kobe beef) and Bibim Bap (a stone pot filled with rice, veggies choice of spicy chicken, beef or pork). The robata bar consists of skewers of different parts of the chicken, beef/ pork skewers, seafood skewers and vegetable skewers. Prices range from $2.50-$4.

Appetizers range from fresh fried oysters, baked collar yellowtail/ salmon and shrimp shumai. Also available are various salads, noodles and rice dishes as well as Jidori Chicken Teriyaki and Miso Black Cod . Sushi includes crispy rice with tuna, baked crab hand-roll , crispy albacore sashimi  and ahi tuna nabiyori  (wonton skin wrapped spicy tuna in mango sauce),  and tomato salmon roll (picy tuna and crab, topped with salmon, tomato, and mozzarella cheese).  Rolls range in price from $6- $13.

Short Ribs

Lunch combinations are a very good deal for $10-$14, which include  miso soup, salad and rice. My personal favorite lunch special is four hand rolls, including a choice of spicy tuna, california roll, cucumber, spicy scallop, salmon, albacore, salmon skin or eel and avocado for $13.

Dinner offerings also include omakase for $55 or $90 a person. There is an extensive sake list as well as beer and wine.

I know that many people have a favorite sushi restaurant, but Izakaya M offers more than sushi and is definitely worth a try.

I’ve been so curious about this restaurant, thanks for a great review. Will definitely check it out now.

My husband and I were blown away. The crab tempura (not what it’s called, but you’ll recognize it) has the crispiest, non-oiliest crust I have ever had. Everything was wonderful. The skewers were delicious, especially the pork belly. I can’t wait to go back.
