The Rustic Spoon is a restaurant you would  most likely pass by if you weren’t looking for it. Described as Thai Fusion, it’s quite unique for its North Hollywood location.

There is outdoor as well as indoor seating with well maintained plants on the outside which is a nice distraction from busy Lankershim Blvd. There are about five tables outside and ten inside making it a relatively small place, but going there at seven o’clock on a Friday, I didn’t have much trouble getting a table, although it did get  busy as we walked out.

The Rustic Spoon is decorated with modern flair that still holds true to its Asian roots. There are jars of various dried teas on the walls that change monthly. The service is prompt and friendly and the servers make good suggestions for food and drinks. The food itself is  more ambitious and creative than most other traditional Thai restaurants.

Crisp Pork Belly

The pork belly comes on top of wilted spinach with a reduced vinegar sauce. It’s quite tender and perfectly complemented by the spinach and luscious sauce, rounding it out to a great dish. The grilled steak salad is very good multi-dimensional dish somewhat out of the realm of traditional Thai, although it is crusted with an array of lovely Thai spice. The rustic spicy chicken is beautiful — perfectly moist with incredibly fresh pumpkin in a divine sauce.

The star dish of this eatery is the drunken noodles which is composed of rice noodles with peppers, onions, a shot of Thai whiskey, and a choice of chicken, tofu, beef, or shrimp. It’s a delicious distillation of  perfectly done Thai noodles that noodle lovers lust over. It is a dish that makes you completely forget you are even eating it — that is until you look down and it is all gone.

There were only two dishes I wasn’t crazy about — the crunchy salmon roll appetizer and the filet mignon pho — as both were bland for my tastes.

Virgin Rose Mojito

There is no alcohol served here, but the virgin drinks are all perfectly executed. The rose mojito is a very sweet drink featuring rose syrup, lime juice, mint and sparkling water. It’s reminiscent of summer and exhibits a truly unique flavor.  Another drink, the bloody lychee, is sparkling lychee juice with pomegranate. The flavors accompany each other ever so beautifully.

Grilled Steak Salad

The Rustic Spoon is a standout in a sea of just okay curries and regular noodles at many other Thai restaurants. It challenges what Thai food is —  fresher, better, and worldlier for decent prices. The Rustic Spoon is a must try restaurant.
