The Weekend Cocktail: 42 Below and Dusk in Eden

The sultry and sensual sound of the name alone would make me order this cocktail, but  the fact that it is so amazingly tasty makes it all the better. I was also introduced to a new vodka — 42 Below.  New Zeland is producing some mighty fine wines, but I was not aware that they were also kicking it in the spirits world as well.

42 Below is distilled three times from non-genetically engineered wheat. Natural spring water, whose source hails from an extinct volcanic region, is used as a wash before a final distillation and a trip through 35 different filters. The result is a smooth vodka free of the majority of impurities.

Dusk in Eden using 42 Below Vodka

The New Zealand distillery, which produces the spirits 42 degrees below the equator, now also has four very interesting infusions: Feijoa and Passion Fruit (the only two currently available in the U.S.)  and Kiwi and Manuka Honey. These may not be your everyday commercial infusions but they are very well done and worth a shot at creating some great drinks. Order online at Bevmo.com

Cheers!

Dusk in Eden

3 parts 42 Below Vodka

2 large slices of pomegranate, chopped

2 parts apple juice

Dash of simple syrup (recipe below)

Muddle together pomegranate and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add vodka and juice and fill with ice! Shake well and strain into two chilled martini glasses. Garnish with pomegranate  seeds.

Simple Syrup

1 cup granulated sugar

1-cup water

In a small saucepan heat the sugar and water and bring to a boil. When the sugar is completely dissolved remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Refrigerate, covered, for up to 1 week.
