“A Better Life” Screening Benefits CHAMPS:   CHAMPS Charter High School of the Arts presents a screening of A Better Lifefollowed by a Q & A with director Chris Weitz. Actor Demián Bichiris is  a current Oscar nominee for his performance as a gardener in East L.A. who tries to give his son the opportunities he never had, all the while struggling to keep him away from immigration agents and gangs.  All proceeds benefit CHAMPS Charter High School of the Arts. When/Where: Friday, February 17, 6 p.m., Panorama High School Auditorium, 8015 Van Nuys Blvd., Panorama City; $10

Noho Dine Out FridaysGet out into the community for a weekly food truck fest, boutique vendors and street performers. Dogs welcome too! Every Friday,  5 p.m. -8 p.m., The Parking Lot at 11458 Burbank Blvd, North Hollywood. Admission free; food and vendors cost.

Astronomy WalkJoin local astronomer, volunteer naturalist Pat, on a moderate ½-mile hike to the viewing platform to see solar system. All programs meet at the Victory Blvd. entrance trailhead. When/Where: Friday, February 17, 6:30pm -8:30 p.m.(Upper Las Virgenes Open Space Preserve) North of US-101 and West of Valley Circle Blvd., West Hills;  Admission free; parking $3. Click here for directions.

Bananas! The Life of Josephine BakerAn  award-winning, one-woman tour-de-force play based on the extraordinary life of international star and civil rights freedom fighter, Josephine Baker. Drama, comedy, and music recount Baker’s “rise from the slums of East St. Louis to the grand stages of Europe.” When/Where: Tuesday-Saturday, 8 p.m., Sundays at 3 p.m. J.E.T. Masters of American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale 2012The Autry National Center’s Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale is considered the country’s most important Western art show. Each year, more than 75 nationally recognized, contemporary Western artists challenge themselves to create and exhibit their very best work. Stylistically and thematically diverse, their works represent the extraordinary range of subject matter that contemporary, historic, and mythic Western experiences inspire. When/Where: Through March 18, Autry National Center, 4700 Western Heritage Way, Griffith Park; Exhibition free with museum admission.

Whale of a Weekend: It’s  the annual migration of the Pacific gray whale, which completes one of the longest migrations of any species, traveling 10,000 to 14,000 miles round trip between the arctic seas and the warm lagoons of Baja California, Mexico. This migration takes the whales past the Santa Monica Pier – sometimes within viewing distance from the west end observation deck. When/Where:  Feb. 18-19 from 12:30 p.m.-5 p.m., Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, 1600 Ocean Front Walk (beneath the Santa Monica Pier), Santa Monica; Admission is free for children 12 and under; for all others, admission is $3, with a suggested donation of $5. For groups of 10 or more, admission is $2 per person, regardless of age.
