The Great Los Angeles River Clean-up: Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) estimates more than 25 tons of garbage will be pulled from 15 river clean-up sites sprawling from the Sepulveda Basin to Tujunga Wash to Long Beach during its 23rd Annual The Great Los Angeles River CleanUp. It gets underway Saturday, April 28, 9:00 a.m. – noon. The Great Los Angeles River CleanUp locations include: Sepulveda Basin, Encino; Big Tujunga Wash, Sunland; Griffith Park; Atwater Village (2 sites); Glassell Park; Cypress Park (3 sites); Elysian Valley (3 sites); Compton Creek, Carson; and Long Beach (2 sites). Heritage Days: Hundreds of re-enactors will recreate the epic conflict of the American Civil War on the broad fields of Pierce College this weekend. Visitors will view exciting cavalry charges, artillery barrages, and infantry assaults that were part of America’s watershed event, one that transformed a mere union of states into a nation! Throughout each day, demonstrations and presentations will take place, including Victorian dancing, military drill, and skills and crafts from the era. The Grilled Cheese Invitational: Cheesiness in all its glory is back this Saturday, April 28, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. It’s known as the largest, craziest, and most exciting Grilled Cheese cooking contest in the country. The goal is to find the perfect grilled cheese “sammich,” so says Tim Walker, an artist in downtown LA who started it in 2003 as a competition between friends. It’s now become a national movement dedicated to the art of Grilled Cheese, where amateur and professional chefs to compete side-by-side in the hopes of becoming a true Grilled Cheese Champion. Various vendors will sell grilled cheese sandwiches for $2-5. Highlights will include: Amateur and Professional Grilled Cheese Competitions. 35th Doo Dah Parade: This distinctive parade will rumble through East Pasadena on Saturday (it’s also referred to as the “twisted sister of the Rose Bowl Parade).
