LA Street Food Festival

The 3rd Annual LA Street Food Fest Summer Tasting is back on Saturday, July 21 at the Rose Bowl.  Enjoy sample signature bites from more than 100  street food vendors from hot gourmet food trucks, old school carts and stands to celebrity chefs and street inspired dishes from LA’s best restaurants, as well as a collection of Top Chefs and special chefs from Baja — all serving from  tents at the Rose Bowl.

Here’s some details: sip a cold beer in one of two beer gardens, hang with  signature Sailor Jerry Rum and Hendricks Gin cocktails at one of the bars, sample and learn about more than a dozen top shelf tequila and mezcal labels in the ‘The Hallucination’ Tequila Tent sponsored by Rivera, drink cold beverages like Honest Tea, Coba, Function, Activate Water and IZZE; attend an  Ice Cream Social featuring some favorite frozen treats like CoolHaus, Longboards and many more; enjoy tunes from DJ Bianca and family friendly activities like face painting for the kids; strike a pose at the Oh! Snap photo booth on the field of the Rose Bowl or get a shot with your favorite chef; vote for your favorite chef at the cook out competition.

Two levels of tickets are available for all ages: the VIP hour from  3 p.m.-4:30 p.m. has just 1500 tickets available; general admission is  5 p.m.-9 p.m. with 5000 available.  The price of the ticket includes everything, including free parking.

John Nese of Galco's Soda Pop Shop

Soda gets a bad rap, but when you’re talking about old school soda as well as innovative new creations, then that’s a whole other story.  With that in mind, it worth a trip to check out  Galco’s Soda Pop Stop and Second Annual Summer Soda Tasting from 5-8 p.m. on July 22, 2012. The family-friendly event will feature a myriad of soda samples, live music, comedy, and a chance to chat it up with Galco’s owner John Nese, aka the “King of Pop.”

This year’s soda selections will feature soda debuts as well as spotlighting unusual flavors for a soda smorgasbord. Being unveiled will be a West Coast launch of a national line of sodas from Dublin Bottling Works.

Samplings at press time include: Old Dominion Root Beer (based on a historical recipe from the Library of Congress), Mr. Q Cumber (soda of the year winner and first distributed at Galco’s), Sweet Blossom line of floral sodas: rose, lavender, elderflower and jasmine, Ginger soda by Bruce Cost: fresh ginger, jasmine green tea and pomegranate, French sodas from Rieme (company has been producing sodas since 1921), Volcanic Mineral Refresher water (it’s said to be better for athletes than Gatorade; also helps hangovers/headaches).

In between soda tastings,  enjoy a variety of entertainment, including a performance by Don & Bunk, original members of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention. Also, an appearance by author /humorist Charles Phoenix who will be at mixing and serving two new “Poptails” and his latest Test Kitchen creation — a Seven-Layer Soda Pop Rock Cake made with sodas and candies found on Galco’s shelves.

Tickets for the Summer Soda Tasting are $12 in advance, $15 the day of the event and will be available for purchase at Galco’s or online via the Friends of the Southwest Museum, www.friendsofthesouthwestmuseum.com.  Proceeds from all store sales at the event will also be donated to the Friends of the Southwest Museum by Galco’s.

Galco’s is located at 5702 York Boulevard, Highland Park, 90042. For more information, call (323) 255-7115.
