Once Upon a Canyon Night: “Airplane! The Reading!!” will be read in the TreePeople ampitheatre with very special guest Robert Forster on Friday and Saturday, September 21 and 22 at 8pm. This is the 8th annual hilarious event that is guaranteed to be a free-wheeling re-imagination of the first table-reading of the original screenplay of the classic comedy movie. One script, 11 actors, 69 characters – and a whole evening of fun!
The 4th Annual Septemberfest: The Santa Monica Pier parking lot is going to be hopping with local brews, bands, and food this Saturday. Admission includes unlimited beer, with food sold separately. Food trucks on hand will include The Bun Truck, Border Grill, Rebel Bite, Komodo, Trailer Park, Slammin’ Sliders, Cairo Cowboy, Tainamite, and Ludo Truck. Tickets are $40 for general admission and $50 for VIP.
7th Annual Malibu Canyon Dirt Dash Race: This race is formerly known as the Salvation Army 5K. It’s on a scenic territory on on the trails around Malibu Creek State Park, and the 5k Mud Run (with rope climbs, swings, bridge crossings and mud pit). This event is for all levels — walker, runner, hiker. 5k/10k Trail Runs, 5k Mud Run, Kids Runs. Event is limited to 1500 participants. 6:30 a.m.-noon.
Santa Monica Airport Open House: SMO hosts its second annual Open House on Saturday, September 22 from 11 am to 4 pm. Enjoy a free, fun-filled day exploring the airport’s campus, offering a diverse range of attractions and experiences for the entire family. Take a self-guided tou with stops at the Museum of Flying, vintage aircraft displays, an art exhibition at the Santa Monica Art Studios, the Santa Monica Airport Observation Decks, mini -bus tours of the airfield; restaurants, and the Airport Park recreational area. Admission and parking are free. Valet Bike is available, or take the Big Blue Bus to Santa Monica Airport.
TARFEST Music and Art Festival: It’s a free concert on Saturday from 2 p.m.- 9 p.m. the at La Brea Tar Pits featuring live music, public sculptures, Lagunitas Biergarten, Wine Bar and Gourmet Food Trucks.
Lankershim Block Party and Fundraiser: The Antaeus Company, The Road Theater and The J.E.T. Theater in the heart of the Noho Arts District are getting together on Saturday from 4 p.m. – 1 a.m. for an afternoon and evening of theater, music, food and fun.
The Frogtown Artwalk: Take a free, self-guided tour of the artists studios located along the LA River in Elysian Valley (bordering Silverlake which Forbes just named as the top city in their inaugural “America’s Best Hipster Neighborhoods”) in what is known as Frogtown. Check out feature work by over 30 artists, music, mobile gallery pods, a juried art show of work by local youth, food trucks and more. Saturday 4- 9 pm.
Mata Ortiz Pottery Show and Sale: Live pottery demonstrations. Featured artists: Jorge Quintana and Damian Quezada. Also featuring Oaxacan animals and handwoven Zapotec rugs.
