On The Thirty in Sherman Oaks had its grand opening party last week.  This restaurant/lounge quickly replaced Osteria Coppola in the La Reina Center (which also previously housed Panini Cafe and Pomodoro.)  The menu consists of gourmet pizza,  artisan sandwiches,  charcuterie, gourmet cheese, salads, seasonal entrees and a selection of small bar bites — all using thirty seasonal ingredients.  Continuing on the theme,  there are thirty California craft beers and thirty California boutique wines by the glass. Co-owner and chef Justin Urich created a menu that centers on ingredients which he says “focus on fresh and flavorful cuisine while maintaining the unique relationship to the pairing of the hand-selected beers and local wines.” The price points for most menu items range from $7 to $30.  On The Thirty was completely redesigned from top to bottom by co-owner Shawn Kerwin who utilized a  combination of concrete,  walnut wood and copper accents with warm lighting to create the bar area (with flatscreens),  dining area, and outside lounge. There’s also a small stage for live acoustic music.   Kerwin said he “wanted to create a space that my wife and I could enjoy with our friends while maintaining a comfort that we’re used to without having to drive far.”  Let’s hope this eatery has the goods to stay around. The movement in that space is dizzying. 14622 Ventura Boulevard, Sherman Oaks. Open 11 a.m.-11 p.m. daily.

The food court at Westfield Sherman Oaks is now home to the newest  Rounds Premium Burgers- a fast casual chain of reasonably priced gourmet burgers with a choice of beef, turkey,  chicken or veggie.  Prices range from $4.95 for the classic burger with lettuce, tomato, grilled onions and pickles to $7.70 for the California (bacon, cheese, avocado and thousand island).   This is the third location (plus a truck)  for Rounds which opened in West Hollywood two years ago (you can build-a-burger there).   Another location is opening in Pasadena soon.

Also, relatively new to the Westfield Sherman Oaks food court is Sub-Zero Ice Cream and Yogurt (a booming franchise that grew out of of the television Shark Tank).    The concept is a scientific approach to frozen dessert that transforms milk and sugar almost instantly into ice cream (or other frozen creamy options) using liquid nitrogen to flash freeze it.  Create your own flavor, order it in a cup or a cone and create it according to personal taste and dietary needs. First, choose a base — premium or lowfat, custard, yogurt . non-dairy, soy or rice that is measured in a beaker and poured in a bowl. Then pick from  as many of the  48 flavors as you want and choose one  of the 36 toppings (extra charge for more). This frozen treat is so personalized that you can even choose the consistency — Teeth Tingler (soft serve), Numb Tongue (Scoop-able) and Brain Freeze (Hard).  The ice cream maker will then apply liquid nitrogen to the mix—and voila — you’ve got your ice cream or yogurt dessert! It’s fun, very tasty…and you’ll learn a little science too!
