black-licorice-cupI am always looking for interesting ways to learn create new, fun and exciting cocktails. This week I am inspired by National Licorice Day. A yummy confectionery taken from extract of the licorice plant, licorice contains a compound that is about 50 times sweeter than sugar. The root has been used in both Eastern and Western medicine to treat a variety of illnesses, ranging from the common cold to kidney disease. Other benefits may include lowering cholesterol and affecting certain hormones. It is also known for helping digestion and is great for settling the stomach after a large meal!

When I was a kid I loved the Red Vines, but as an adult I am very fond of the sultry, rich anise like flavor of the darkest black root. The flavor of licorice is very distinct and can easily dominate a whole dish or cocktail.  Most people are not indifferent — meaning, you either love it or hate it,  Regardless, I think you should at least try this very delicious and uniquely flavored cocktail. Cheers!

 Very Black Licorice Martini

6 ounces vodka

3 ounces sambuca liqueur (tastes like licorice)

2 short black licorice sticks for garnish

Pour the vodka and sambuca into a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into two chilled martini glasses. Garnish with a short black licorice stick.
