 If music be the food of love —play on—and make sure you have a cocktail in hand to celebrate William Shakespeare’s birthday!

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare writes: “Yet mark’d I where the bolt of Cupid fell;/It fell upon a little western flower,/Before milk-white, now purple with love’s wound,/ And maidens call it love-in-idleness.”

“Love in idleness,” which is the love potion flower used by Puck, is popularly known as a wild pansy. To grow your own,  you can order the seeds from  Burpee. Or you can buy a wide array of edible flowers at  Gourmet Sweet Botanicals 

So grab some friends and one of Shakespeare 154 sonnets that revolves around the poet’s relationship with his two muses – a young man with whom he is infatuated, and then later, a “dark” woman and toast the Bard of Avon, with this festive, flowery cocktail of love! Cheers

The Mid-Summer Nights Dream

3 slices cucumber, peeled

6 sprigs mint

4 ounces Tanqueray gin

4 ounces pomegranate juice

2 ounces fresh lime juice

6 drops rose water

Edible pansies for garnish

Pink sugar for rimming the glasses

In a cocktail shaker,  muddle the cucumber and the mint. Add the rest of ingredients. Let sit for a minute.  Shake vigorously. Strain into two Martini Glasses rimmed with pink sugar. Garnish with 1 floating pansy.
