Cactus Taqueria opened on Friday in the former Henry’s Taco’s location on the corner of Tujunga and Moorpark in Studio City.  As most know, Henry’s replaced Studio Sub across the street a couple months ago. Although both are considered “taco stands,” their menus are very different.  Henry’s is serving up their classic meat tacos and burritos and is one of those menus where tradition rules, while Cactus’ offerings  are more expansive with tacos, burritos, tostadas, tortas, quesadillas and fajitas with filling choices of beef, chicken, cheese, shrimp, veggies, ham, fish and beans.

Tuning Fork in Studio City has a new chef  on board — Chef Jay Bedassie, whose previous stints include FarBar in downtown L.A. and Real Food Daily, on the westside.  Bedassie is  making some changes to the menu  and will  be introducing new items daily.  According to co-owner, Joseph Kuras, the new menu will take shape fully by the end of the month and is set to include steak, chicken, and fish entrees, as well as seasonal salads, homemade pizzas, dipping sauces, and desserts.  On the bar front, there’s now a selection of 80 craft beers, as well as a choice wine list with half-off bottles everything Wednesday evening.

The Daily Grill in Studio City is having a very special wine tasting event on Tuesday,  July 16th.   Five wines from Tolosa Winery will be poured and paired with chef-inspired appetizers that include Heirloom Tomato Salad with Fresh Mozzarella, Chicken Piccata, Crabcakes with Beurre Blanc, Wild Mushroom Risotto, Sliced Filet Medallion with Bordelaise. There will be a representative from the winery to answer questions.  The cost is $25 per person.  The last tasting sold out fast, so RSVP by calling 818-769-6336. Space is limited.

The newest SugarFish is opening in the Calabasas Commons this Thursday, June 13.  This is the second in the 818 (Studio City opened a year ago) and the seventh location for this sushi concept by Chef Kazunomi Nozawa. Other locations are in Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Santa Monica, Downtown Los Angeles and Marina Del Rey.  Diners choose from three core menus called Trust Me, a  takeoff from the traditional Japanese omakase. There are limited a la carte dishes. There are no visible sushi chefs behind a sushi bar as everything is quickly made in the kitchen.  Also, there’s no fancy rolls — just pure sushi nigiri and limited sashimi– and strict suggestions that you shouldn’t dip anything in soy sauce if there is already a sauce.

There two upcoming events at Fabio Viviani’s restaurants, Firenze Osteria in North Hollywood and Café Firenze in Agoura. On Saturday, June 15th, Fabio will be hosting a cooking demo and book signing at each restaurant. On the demo agenda are several of Fabio’s favorite, quick and easy recipes including: Grandma’s Meatball recipe, his Mom’s Tiramisu recipe, and the Pork Milanese recipe with the Arugula Side Salad. After the demo, attendees will get to enjoy this delicious three course lunch. Tickets can be purchased by calling the restaurant, and cost $75 a person. Fabio will also be signing his recently released cookbook, Fabio’s Italian Kitchen, which includes over two-hundred traditional Italian recipes OSTERIA COOKING DEMO & BOOK SIGNING. Sat, June 15, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. ; CAFE FIRENZE COOKING DEMO & BOOK SIGNING. Sat, June 15, 4 p.m .– 7 p.m.
