Editor’s Note: We welcome GREEN TRIPPING — a new column exclusively written for My Daily Find by Green Catalyst. GREEN TRIPPING is about hitting the road, carpool-style, to investigate “green” businesses, activities and destinations in the San Fernando Valley. Green Catalyst is a group of business professionals, artists, students, and parents promoting an environmentally friendly agenda in fun and compelling ways. They have helped schools and businesses divert trash from landfills to recycling centers and compost bins. We hope you’ll follow them on these pages and beyond. Check them out at www.greencatalyst.net.

BY SARA SINGER SCHIFF

When I was told the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation was hosting an open house day at the dump, I can’t say I was too excited to attend. Despite hearing that it was a family day out, I couldn’t get past the thought that I might be climbing through piles of garbage. As it turned out, it was not only garbage-free, but interesting.

There is plenty to entertain both children and adults at the Bureau of Sanitation tour, including a free barbecue and free trees.

The Bureau of Sanitation has numerous locations throughout the valley where they clean, fix and park their trucks. These yards are solely for the trucks and completely separate from the garbage dumps, or landfills, where waste is disposed of. The open houses, hosted by the city, offer everyone an opportunity to learn about how these trucks work and to see one step in the waste removal process. While the opportunity to climb onto the trucks and push buttons was clearly a draw for kids, there were plenty of other interesting things for adults too.

Recycling isn't always what you think it is.

Because the city also handles green waste and recycling, there was plenty of information about these services too. If you are like me and always wondering “Can I recycle this?”, it was helpful to find out what exactly can and cannot go in your blue bin. Free trees were also on offer if you could fit them in your car. And a free barbeque was provided if you wanted to hang around after the tour.

For those with greener interests, the Bureau offers free composting workshops at their Griffith Park composting facility where you can learn about backyard composting, worm composting and other gardening techniques. The city also sells discounted composting bins at this location nestled in the heart of Griffith Park.

A trip to the Sanitation department has surprises in store for you and your family.

Where does all that stuff go? How does recycling work. Go Green Tripping and out.

The Bureau has also established a pilot recycling program in an effort to increase residential recycling. The 1-2 year program is being run in partnership with a company called RecycleBank in selected areas across the city, including the West Valley. Those who choose to participate in the program can earn reward points for recycling. Points can be redeemed for groceries, gift cards, restaurants and many other items. To find out if you are eligible to sign up for this program, visit www.lacitysan.org/solid_resources/recycling/curbside/RecyclingRewardsPilotProg.htm.

While a visit to the dump will never be on my top ten list of things to do around the Valley, I have to concede it was a worthwhile outing.

Sanitation workers explain their jobs.

Whether you are green-minded or not, seeing what happens to your garbage is a useful reminder that stuff doesn’t just disappear. There are hundreds of people each day who play a fundamental part in keeping our lives trash-free and our city looking beautiful. And although that may not be the most entertaining aspect of our city, it’s definitely one of the most valuable.

For more information on Department of Sanitation Open House days visit http://www.lacitysan.org/kids/index.htm.

BY DAVID NICHOLS

Lately I’ve been checking out other guys quite a bit. Don’t get me wrong. Things are fine between N. and me. It’s not that I’m contemplating…a lifestyle change. I’m just interested in how my physique compares to the average man on the street. Specifically, I’m concerned about my legs.

Actually, I’m not concerned about my legs. They get me where I want to go, which is basically from my house to Ventura Boulevard and back. But N. and My Beautiful Grown Daughter find them worrisome. “They’re like cute little sticks,” N. tells me. “Yeah, you could be a supermodel,” My Beautiful Grown Daughter chimes in. Great. I house her, feed her, clothe her, educate her for sixteen years and now she’s assailing my body parts. “My legs are perfectly fine,” I say. “They’re good looking. Better than most people’s.” N. turns to MBGD, ignoring my protests. She sighs. “He also thinks he’s five-foot ten.”

I knew this was coming. “I didn’t say I am five-foot ten. I said I used to be five-foot ten. Now I’m five-foot seven. People shrink as they get older.” “Honey, you’re five-foot six. I measured you, remember?” It’s true. She did. The Boy and I each have a pencil mark on the wall behind her office door. They’re nearly the same height, but I think he was standing on tip-toe. “You were never five-foot ten, my love,” she says soothingly. She sounds like Auntie Em assuring Dorothy that her visit to Oz was all a dream. “I was five-foot ten,” I insist. “It was before I ever knew you.” “It must’ve been before you ever knew me too,” says My Beautiful Grown Daughter. I start to feel like I’ve been worn down another couple of inches just during this conversation.

Understand, all this discussion about my pins, as the ’40’s wisecrackers used to call them, comes from genuine love and concern. Over the course of my late wife’s illness I lost a fair amount of weight due to stress. It’s not a method I’d recommend, even in a get-scrawny-fast-as-you-can culture like ours. I understand pole dancing works pretty well, and I’m sure it’s more fun to watch. Anyway, by the time the lovely N. came along I was definitely a fixer-upper and one of her first priorities was to put twenty pounds on me—hopefully in the right areas. Now, thanks to her delicious organic cooking and my natural indolence, the renovation’s more than half done. In fact, I’d venture to say the belly portion of the project is complete. But there’s still work to be done.

The conversation between N. and MBGD turns to another tale of the tape. “I measured his thigh,” N. tells her. “It’s smaller than mine.” MBGD shakes her head sympathetically. Personally, I don’t see a problem. N. has a beautiful figure and if there’s a discrepancy between her measurements and mine I say “Vive la difference!” But, as is often the case, there’s an unwritten lady-law I know nothing about. “Your boyfriend’s not supposed to have smaller thighs than you do,” N. tells me. My Beautiful Grown Daughter nods in agreement. “It’s depressing,” she explains. How she’d know that is beyond me. When her Handsome Folksinger Boyfriend isn’t writing catchy tunes with intelligent, sensitive lyrics he’s at the gym, lifting stupefying amounts of metal. His thighs look like they should be in the display case at Honeybaked. It occurs to me that I may have to start interacting with L.A. Fitness more than the one time a month when I send them my membership fee. But I don’t want to rush into anything. For a man with my apparently delicate constitution it could be dangerous.

This whole issue has taken on some additional urgency as the departure date for our vacation in France draws near. It seems inevitable that at some point I’ll be wearing shorts and, given how concerned the French are with aesthetics, it’s possible my exposed gams might stir up trouble. Still, I saw a glimmer of hope one night when we were watching Househunters International on HGTV. The show’s become a favorite of ours. Watching couples from one country shop for houses in a foreign land you come to realize that the phrase “They want how much for this?!” is universal. It really brings us all together in a warm, fuzzy, “We are the world and we’re broke” kind of way. In this particular episode a British couple is looking for a home on the Costa Del Sol. Nice for them, but the important thing is the male househunter is about my size and age and he’s wearing shorts. True, he’s British, not American, and he’s traipsing around Spain, not France, but hey—close enough. “Look at that guy,” I say to N. “His legs are no bigger than mine and nobody’s looking twice.” “Honey,” she says, “his legs are bigger than yours because he’s much taller than you.” “He’s not that much taller than me. He’s like…five-ten.” She glances up from her home decorating magazine. She likes to thumb through them while we watch the show. If we ever do buy a house in France she’ll be ready. “He’s way taller than five-ten,” she says. “You know you’re not a good estimator.”

She’s got me there. A few months ago she was coming with me to see MBGD’s Handsome Folksinger Boyfriend at a club in Hollywood. Knowing I’d been there before, she asked me how big it was. I told her the place probably held about three or four hundred people. Turns out their posted legal capacity’s on the shy side of two hundred. Since then nobody in the family’s willing to trust my guess about the size of anything. I don’t really care. It’s not like I’m planning to run for fire marshal or anything. Still, I’m not ready to give up. I draw N.’s attention to Brit-In-Shorts again. “Maybe he’s not really as big as he looks,” I suggest. “The television camera does that, you know.” “Honey, your legs are still skinnier than his. And TV makes you look heavier. Not taller.” “Hey, they’re shooting in Europe,” I say. “Maybe it works differently over there.” Too late. She’s gone back to planning her dream bathroom. That’s it. I’m going to have to go to the gym.

I manage to remember where the place is and present myself at the front desk. I’m hoping my membership doesn’t work like insurance, where you pay on it for years and then they raise your rates the first time you actually use it. If it does the girl behind the counter doesn’t mention it. She blows the dust off my keychain tag and checks me in. “Have a good workout,” she says. I figure if I can manage to walk out under my own power later that’ll qualify as a good workout. I head to the locker room and change into the gym clothes N. bought me to replace my Clinton-era running shorts. (Not that I ever ran anywhere during the Clinton era.) I sit down at one of the machines located next to a wall-sized mirror, wondering whether all this is really necessary. Then I catch a glimpse of myself from an unfamiliar angle. Suddenly, there’s no denying it. My legs really do have a certain stick-like appearance. I look like an Olsen twin with a five-day stubble. It’s not good. I look up at CNN on the overhead television and decide I’d better take a cue from the beleaguered BP engineers and start pumping as fast as I can.

That night N. and I are sitting on the couch watching the NBA playoffs. “So,” I tell her, “I went to the gym today and it turns out you’re right. I do have skinny legs.” “See?” she says. “I’m glad you admit it. Now you can start to put some meat on those bones.” We’re watching what will turn out to be the Lakers’ final game against Oklahoma City. The smell of victory is in the air and a raft of celebrity fans have turned out to savor it. The camera picks out Tom Cruise and Jeffrey Katzenberg sitting together. “Look at that,” I say. “Two of the shortest men in Hollywood, side by side.” The shot changes to a close-up of David Spade in the stands. “Wow,” I say. “He’s short too.” N. smiles, teasing me. “Maybe the Lakers are doing a short-guys-in-show-business promotion. You should be there, honey.” Cut to Danny DeVito. “Alright, now I’m upset,” I say. “They really are doing short guys in show business. I’m short. I’m in show business. Where was my invitation?” Then it hits me. “Wait a minute. If it’s short guy night and I wasn’t invited, that can only mean one thing.” “What’s that?” she asks. “I really am five-foot ten.” “That must be it.” She puts her arm through mine and moves closer to me. “Skinny Legs,” she whispers.

David Nichols is a TV writer/producer who has worked on such shows as “Caroline In The City”, “Grace Under Fire”, and “Evening Shade.” Until his legs fatten up he’s available for print and runway modeling. No nudity — for the sake of everyone involved.

4GOOD was created in the summer of 2009 when two San Fernando Valley families (with four children under 10 among them) were looking for a meaningful way to show their kids how important it is to give back. After much searching, they realized it was not easy to find volunteer activities that would be appropriate and interesting for their young kids. Plus, they discovered that most organizations don’t accommodate kids joining along in the volunteer process. It was then that Erika and Peter Athanas and Katie and Jeff Goldman decided to start their own organization with the mission to “help families actively participate in volunteer activities to foster the values of kindness, compassion, tolerance, community responsibility and good citizenship.” For more info about how to get involved: www.4goodcommunity.org Sweet Harts 13704 Ventura Blvd. Sherman Oaks, CA (South/West corner of Woodman & Ventura-if parking lot is full please use neighborhood side streets).

(Editor’s Note: This is the first in a three part series about Adventures in Fly Fishing)

The conversation revolved around cutthroats and perfect casting, but we weren’t talking Hollywood. I was sitting at a table with a half dozen dudes encompassing a wide variety of character types, from grizzled, grinning retirees to buttoned-down businessmen. All of them had one thing in common: a love of fly fishing.

This was my first meeting of the Sierra Pacific Fly Fishers (SPFF) and I was learning fast, taking in just a wee bit more than I wanted to know. One guy mentioned that a .44 caliber gun was best for bear attacks, another talked rattlesnakes. I thought scales and funny smells were the scariest things I’d deal with in my new sport of choice. Silly me.

Left, Bennett Mintz, my soon-to-be casting instructor, caughta 90-pound Pacific sailfish while fly-fishing for billfish in Guatemala.

The San Fernando Valley-based club meets the third Thursday of every month at The Monteray of Encino. Of the 200-plus members in attendance at the May 20 meeting, I discovered some devote a hefty portion of their twlight years to catching fish, while some are weekend warriors, eager escapists who can’t wait to hoist “gone fishing” signs outside their offices come Friday.

I went to the meeting in search of new adventures, new sources of inspiration to fuel my writing career and a physical activity that takes me way outside my comfort zone. Since the dinner inched me outside the familiarity of my bookish, everyday habits (think reading, writing, movies, theatre), I’m going to have to say the sport itself will land me somewhere in my comfort zone’s Siberian realm. The club’s past president, Bennett Mintz, has already agreed to take me on a fly fishing lesson at Balboa Park in the coming weeks (seriously, Balboa Park for fishing lessons – who knew?). He’ll teach me how to tie a fly and cast a line, two activities that are as foreign to me as speed to a turtle. I’m already thanking the gods of ill-coordinated indoorsy types that Bennett appears to be a patient man.

Though reel talk abounds with this bunch, SPFF doesn’t solely focus on a good catch. They also support education and conservation in a meaningful way. At the May meeting, they granted three scholarships to high school seniors Tyler Engel, Prathiba Sewandi Madigaploa and Sorelle Fluke, of San Pedro High School, Cleveland High School and Newbury Park High School, respectively. The students each got $1,000 to help fund studies in marine/aquatic biology and oceanography. Other educational efforts include fly tying classes and casting lessons at Reseda High School. Graduates of casting classes take a trip to Bishop to try their luck at hooking trout in the Owens River.

From left, high school students Prathiba Sewandi Madigaploa (Cleveland High), Sorelle Fluke (Newbury Park High) and Tyler Engel (San Pedro High)all got $1,000 scholarships at the May meeting of SPFF.

If you’re simply up for learning more about flyfishing, the meetings often feature speakers who are experts in the field. I had the pleasure of viewing a slide show by Dave McCoy, a wildlife and destination photographer, who also works as a fly fishing guide. McCoy’s Seattle-based guide service, Emerald Waters Anglers, fishes Washington’s waters from Puget Sound to the Olympic Peninsula and Cascade Mountains. McCoy had some stunning shots of hidden creeks and more popular waters all over the state, images that inspire stewardship of the environment. He’s all about conservation, aiming to educate as many people as possible about the fragility of our planet’s waters and the importance of maintaining marine eco-systems. He’s also a hell of a fisherman, a young guy who has reportedly been casting lines since he was in diapers.

Wearing a simple necklace and earrings has its place, but in Heidi St. John’s world, anyone wearing only that is an exciting blank palette for her to work some styling magic.

LTH Studio's Heidi St. John. Photo: Karen Young

“I love when people walk in without much jewelry or with pieces they really love [that they want to work with] because it gives me the opportunity to help them figure out their own personality with jewelry,” says St. John, who owns LTH Studio in Studio City.

Top to Bottom: Sharon Kaplan vintage Coco Chanel pendant with turquoise necklace; Sharon Kaplan enamel peace sign; Ginger Peachy multi- prrecious gem necklace.

St. John, a Sherman Oaks native, has made Ventura Blvd. her business home for the past seven years — first, inside the now closed Lisa Angel boutique, and now, her own store which she opened five years ago. She doesn’t just sell pieces of jewelry — she styles and customizes according to personal taste.

LTH Studio is a most unassuming, yet upscale boutique, filled with an array of unique jewelry — mostly meaningful pieces from over 35 designers — many of whom make one-of-a-kind items. Think “girlfriend’s closet” with a tad of inspiration thrown in for good measure.

Top-Bottom: Kazzie gold plate leaf necklace on oxidized silver chain; Romy Ivsik tourmaline briolette drop necklace.

This Friday and Saturday (May 7 and 8), St. John is celebrating Mother’s Day with a trunk show featuring four designers who will be available to meet and greet: Stormie, who does native American beading with inspirational images; Judith Adelson, whose playful, elegant designs combine a modern look often with 4000 year old trade wind beads from Southeast Asia; Ginger Peachy, a 14 and 18 K fine jeweler who used precious stones; and Sharon Kaplan, noted for her pearl and enamel jewelry.

St. John’s mission is to help her customers grow their personal style with layering and unique pieces. She also makes it an accessible and casual environment where women can freely peruse and men can feel comfortable and know that if help is needed, St. John is there with her intuitive and creative eye.

“I love mixing fine jewelry with raw materials, such as beads and leather, with gold,” explains St. John. “I like to create an eclectic look.”

Top-Bottom: Judith Adelson ancient trade beads from South East Asia with 18kt; Ginger Peachy gold stacking rings.

St. John has a close relationship with all the designers— most of whom have found her over the years. While LTH Studio is chock-full of ready-to wear jewelry (all handmade), St. John will work with individual customers and her designers to customize and create personal pieces.

“I work with customers to help tell a story with the jewelry. If someone brings in their own pieces, I will use that as a base to incorporate other pieces,” says St. John, who adds that her clients are those who are seeking something a little different.

St. John’s appeal has also made Hollywood take notice over the years. Among the latest, jewelry from LTH can be seen on the upcoming Love and Other Drugs starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathway, as well as in the latest Transformers. Her pieces were also recently seen on Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters.

Top-Bottom: Jewels & co 18kt gold hoops with rubies; Stormie "Owl" bracelet, Seven wishes bracelet, "world" vintage turquoise bangle, single bracelets ancient trade beads.

If you’re looking for Tiffany’s, LTH Studio might not be the place for you. What it is, however, is a boutique for those interested in creating personal style with a mix of precious, semi-precious stones, antique beads, silver and gold — in necklaces, rings, charms, bracelets, leather and more. Elegance, spirituality, boho chic — whatever your personality dictates — all wrapped up in a most special type of “bling.”

LTH Trunk Show highlights four designers but all inventory will be available for purchase. Friday, May 7 (3 – 8pm ). Saturday, May 8 (11am-6pm). Refreshments will be served.
