July’s here and for many, it’s vacation time! If you are planning an overseas adventure, think about a unique trip in France (after all, today is Bastille Day). The euro is working in our favor, making this region all the more affordable compared to recent years.

We just returned from a luxury barge cruise through the Loire Valley and Burgundy, and for you foodie fanatics and oenophiles, this is the type of excursion that will forever remain embroidered to your heart.

Renaissance barge docked in a French town. Photos: Mary McGrath

Luxury barges have been converted from carrying cargo into pristine hotel vessels accommodating up to eight passengers as well as a crew of five to attend to every detail. Amenities on the barge will satiate the most discriminating traveler. You’ll be spoiled, to say the least.

A selection of cheeses on the barge.

Barge cruising is the perfect combination of relaxation, exquisite dining and wine pairings. You can even get off the barge to stroll along the canal, or take a bike ride into one of the many charming towns nearby.

Included in our itinerary were several visits to notable chateaus in the region, wine tastings, bike rides, and an optional balloon tour over the wine region for an additional charge. It was a tough life indeed, including the hot tub on deck for decompression purposes.

There are many tour operators hosting barge tours, but we selected Gobarging.com aboard their opulent Renaissance, for its upscale amenities. Wine pairings were selected by region, with feasts prepared daily by 29 year-old Slawek, reminding me of a young Wolfgang Puck.

Paris: The cathedral at Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower.

We decided to fly into Paris ahead of time, to get acclimated to the time zone, and decompress before boarding the barge. This meant a tour through the Louvre, Notre Dame and other areas of interest, along with sampling the local cuisine. A must is sitting in one of the many cafes to watch life go by.

Locals enjoy a picnic above the Seine.

Contrary to popular sentiment, Parisians were not snooty or rude. Be respectful, and you’ll find that the French are like any people in larger cities. Paris reminded me a bit of NYC with a bit of Rome thrown in for flavor.

Satiated after six days of barging, we then returned to Paris to take in more sites, and visit the areas surrounding the Eiffel Tower. While dining at a local café, we witnessed a hoard of Harley riders zooming by hailing to the Fourth of July. Who says you can’t celebrate abroad?

All roads lead to Paris.

If you’re a spontaneous traveler, check and see if there are any barge cancellations, which can result in some favorable savings. For those who prefer to plan ahead, you have a wide selection of areas from which to choose for barging. Scotland is next on the radar for this lassie. I can’t get enough of those castles.

But many people prefer to book the entire barge and create a memorable vacation with family and friends that will be enjoyed for years to come.

With stay-cations still being all the rage, where can you go to find some finery, winery and flavor? Why not Ojai, less than two hours away from Los Angeles?

The Lavender Inn is a cozy B & B, plus culinary school, spa and more. All Photos: Mary McGrath

Ojai is blessed with a temperate climate, and because of this, engages visitors all year round. Expansive fields enable the local farmers to grow olives, lavender, pixie tangerines, and many other crops, many of which can be converted into a variety of items for consumer usage.

Need a getaway for the entire family? Head to the Ojai Olive Farm where you can enjoy the unbridled terrain of expansive olive orchards. There, you can enjoy an olive oil tasting where the nuances of the oils can be savored much like sampling the fine wines of Burgundy.

Some of the oils we sampled had a bite, some were citrus in nature, and others were infused with rosemary. In the back room, you can see the industry of olive oil production, which is a real education in itself.

Olive oil tasting at the Ojai Olive Farm.

For wine enthusiasts, head to the ever-popular Casa Barranca Wine Tasting & Gallery. They even have some organic wines for purists!

Striped Bass at Feast Bistro.

Nearby, there’s the New Oak Ranch, where you can see how lavender is grown and incorporated into a variety of products. We took home a jar of Lavender Tomato Jam, and slabbed it on toast with cream cheese. I’m sure the jar will be empty by the end of the week.

Lavender fields at the New Oak Ranch.

Ojai is an artisan’s delight, with many shops sprinkled along the main artery of the city. Head to Human Arts, a gallery of contemporary crafts, jewelry and furniture, where you can see a vast display of original creations.

Cooking class at the Lavender Inn-on the left:Karen Misuraca, on the right, Lee Daley (far left top is Janis Flippin).

What fun is it to travel without eating? For casual Italian dining, try Boccali’s Pizza and Pasta, but make sure you save room for their delicious strawberry shortcake, a coveted family recipe. For fine dining, the fusion at Feast Bistro is a must, showcasing the talents of Susan Coulter.

Strawberry Shortcake from Boccali's Pizza and Pasta

The Lavender Inn provides a cozy B&B with one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had. They even host cooking classes to satiate the Julia Child in you, drawing upon the local lavender to incorporate into a variety of dishes. The price is reasonable— starting at $180 for a room to $275-$300 for a 1000 square foot cottage (inquire about specials). Also not to miss is their new spa.

Whether it’s a rustic getaway you’re after, some rural family fun, or a romantic getaway, check out the oh-so-close Ojai where your stay-cation dreams can come true.

Eclectic offerings at the HumanArts Gallery.

I love the holidays. Not just because chestnuts are roasting in an open fire or because friends and family will gather to celebrate. Not even for the delicious scents of pine and cinnamon wafting through the air, or the decadent holiday sweets. Those are all good reasons to love the holidays, mind you. But I have another.

I like sparkly things.

That’s right. I admit it. I love holiday lights and décor, as much now as I did when I was a child driving around with my grandparents, oohing and ahing over the lavish holiday light displays in my favorite hometown neighborhoods. All of those shimmering twinkle lights seemed to create the kind of magic I never wanted to stop believing in.

Assuming I am not the only one with this childlike passion, I’ve put together a list of some of some wonderful holiday lighting ceremonies and community events in and around Los Angeles. You should absolutely attend your local holiday lighting festivities, but since the holidays come only once a year, why stop there? The festivities start this week…get jinglin’!

According to the SCRA, this year’s parade will be bigger and better than ever with more floats, music – including area high school bands and performance groups – VIPs and participation from schools, community groups, retailers and more. “Stars Shine Bright,” honors both the heritage of Studio City in the film industry as well as all of the people who make Studio City a great place to live, work and shop. Studio City’s community “stars” make the neighborhood shine, from educating children to protecting property to helping our neighbors, just to name a few ways.
How far would you drive for a shake? Not just any shake, but a California original… the Hadley’s Date Shake. If you haven’t had one in a while, it may be time for a road trip. And while you’re headed in that direction, might as well make a night of it at the legendary – and now renovated – retro chic Palm Springs Riviera Resort and Spa. We did it several months ago, though we had a fine excuse: my son Kellen was in a swim meet in Palm Springs, so we decided to make a weekend of it.

Swim team kids lounging at the Palm Springs Riviera. Photo: Jennifer Evans Gardner

We got on the road right after school let out, just in time to hit the kind of traffic your mother warned you about when you threatened to move to LA What should have been a two hour drive wound up being a four hour drive. To be fair, it included a few bathroom breaks, but if I were you, I’d hit the road early if you plan to travel on a Friday when the rest of the city is making its exodus.

Whatever weariness we experienced from the drive dissolved as soon as we got a gander at the new Palm Springs Riviera. This 1960’s landmark hotel (built in 1959), which had become tired and worn over the years, has undergone a serious $70 million renovation and is complete and total eye candy inside and out. The decadent lobby glows orange and incandescent from the road as you pull your car up to the sophisticated valet.

Retro Arcade and Lounge in the Palm Springs Riviera. Photo: Courtesy: PSR

Once inside, the whimsical Alice in Wonderland-like design (they call it “Hollywood Regency”) acts as a hallucinogenic and along with the mod music, delights the senses… just walking through the lobby I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. When was the last time a chandelier made you smile? This place also has a serious celeb past… Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Sony & Cher, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Frank Sinatra are just some of the players who cavorted by the Riviera pool. Speaking of the pool, when the sun goes down, fires burn in pits all around, creating a magical, if not uber trendy, scene.

My son was ecstatic at our mid-century luxury suite, which incidentally, had it own patio and fire that would have burned all night if I hadn’t called and asked the staff to put it out (it was windy). The only time we didn’t love the Riviera was at around 3 a.m., when the groovy music beat stopped being groovy and started being annoying. Never mind. The Palm Springs Riviera was good enough for Frank, and it was good enough for us. We vowed to return, promising to find time to play some golf, do some go-carting and even take the Palm Springs Aerial Tram up to San Jacinto Peak.

After the festivities of the swim meet, we headed back to the city, but not before stopping at the flagship Hadley’s along the highway for one of their famous date shakes. After all, the shake was what I had secretly been looking forward to all weekend. Having had one in college years ago, I couldn’t wait to introduce my family to this institution.

Kellen was apprehensive, but the friendly folks at Hadley’s were happy to give him a sample. One taste of the sweet shake and he was hooked. Let’s just say that getting a child to eat or drink dates in any form is nothing short of a miracle and almost worth the drive in itself. I got my shake with walnuts, and happily slurped it down as we shopped for other date-related items… Medjool dates stuffed with walnuts, Degle Noor chocolate covered dates, date loaf, Empress date granola and so on. If you hate dates, no worries – there are plenty of non-date related items to eat, drink and purchase. However, drinking the Hadley’s Date Shake is partaking in California history, akin to eating a Tommy’s Burger or a Pink’s hot dog in L.A. Hadley’s has been open since 1931, and making their addictive sweet date shakes for decades. Is Hadley’s date shake alone worth the drive? Maybe not. But with so many other attractions in Palm Springs, it would be a shame to miss the experience. And remember, it’s not just a fun road trip – it’s a history lesson.

In today’s economy, the name of the travel game is to find creative ways to cut costs. Air travel has become not only uncomfortable with long security lines, no-frills customer service and cramped legroom — it has become prohibitively expensive, too. The answer, at least for me, is to find vacation spots that are within a short drive, but feel like they are worlds away. One such place is Terranea.

Sky view of the Terranea Resort. Photos courtesy of Terranea

If Terranea sounds more like a dream than a resort, it’s probably because it is. Perched high above the ocean in Rancho Palos Verdes, just an hour away from the San Fernando Valley, Terranea sits on 102 pristine acres — 75 of them “green space” — overlooking some of the Pacific’s most breathtaking views. Rising out of the ocean directly across from Terranea is Catalina Island, visible even on a hazy day. With 582 rooms, three signature restaurants, three salt-water pools, an oceanfront spa complex, kids’ club, retail shops, hiking trails and its own secluded cove, Terranea is the perfect place in which to get lost. And while the rooms aren’t exactly a bargain (except when there is a special deal, which there is at the end of this article), one can rationalize that without the cost of airfare, luxury at a resort that respects the environment the way this one does is a very good deal.

Dining al fresco at Nelson's Restaurant, the "surf shack" of Terranea.

Open for just a few months at this writing, the paint on Terranea is barely dry, so it doesn’t have the soul of an old seaside resort, but it does have history: this is the exact spot where the 1950’s Marineland of the Pacific once stood, and Terranea’s owners have incorporated elements from the past into the building of this resort, giving it a great start. But let’s talk about food (because what’s a road trip without something delicious at the end of the drive?).

On a recent solo day trip, I enjoyed an al fresco lunch on the cliff-side terrace of Nelson’s Restaurant, Terranea’s take on a “surf shack.” Named after the Lloyd Bridge’s character in the old TV series “Sea Hunt,” this restaurant boasts some of the most stunning views on the property. An homage to Mr. Bridge’s lifetime efforts to protect the environment and the ocean, Nelson’s is just one of the many examples of this environmentally conscious property: furnished in all-recycled materials, even the centerpiece bar is made from recycled wine bottles.

Phenomenal Fish and Chips — delicate halibut that had been dipped in a beer batter, impossibly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside — almost like a tempura.

Here I indulged in some of the best fish and chips I have ever eaten: delicate halibut that had been dipped in a beer batter, impossibly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside — almost like a tempura. The fries were skinny and well done, just the way I like them, and the tartar sauce thick and homemade, dotted with tiny chunks of pickles. Who cared that I likely consumed a week’s worth of fat grams in that one meal? The sun was warm, and I felt that I could reach out and touch the giant pod of dolphins (we counted eight) that passed below, magically slipping in and out of the ocean.

Terranea sits on 102 pristine acres -- 75 of them “green space” -- overlooking some of the Pacific’s most breathtaking views.

Terranea is the perfect place for a day trip, though you will likely want to stay longer than a few hours once you get there.

They do not offer day passes to utilize pools, however, the restaurants, golf course and spa are open to non-resort guests. If a non-resort guest books a spa treatment they have access to the spa facility including pool, lounges, whirlpool, sauna and locker rooms for the day of the treatment.

And if you decide to take your kids along, don’t be offended if they would rather go to the kids’ club than hang with you – with activities like photography, “oceanarium adventures,” s’mores roasts, and a 7 year-old concierge devoted just to them, you can’t really blame them. That’s okay, though… more time for fish n’ chips, is what I say.

Special deal alert! Starting Tuesday, October 13 for 15 days (ends at 11:59 pm on the 27th) Terranea will be offering a 50% off special – rates starting at $210! Guests can book their stay now through December 17. Visit www.terranea.com for more details and to make reservations (a light box will pop up on the home page starting this coming Tuesday).

Some road trips take you hours away, others take you minutes. And then there are those that take you worlds away. Summer is pretty much over, but you can still cling to it with a quick road trip to 1930’s Hollywood via the Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica.

Opened last April on the former estate of 1930’s actress and party girl Marion Davies, this “public beach club” and swimming pool, along with the adjacent Marion Davies Guesthouse, were once part of what was called The Versailles of Hollywood. The historic guesthouse is also now open to the public for tours or just hanging around. The Beach House was made possible by generous gift ($27.5 million) from the Annenberg Foundation, at the recommendation of Wallis Annenberg. It is operated by the City of Santa Monica and owned by the State of California. The project architect was Frederick Fisher.

The Annenberg Community Beach House opened in April 2009 on the site that was once Marion Davies' estate. Photo: Grant Mudford, 2009

Though the mansion itself, built by the actress’ lifelong love William Randolph Hearst (and overseen by noted architect Julia Morgan) has long since been demolished, the spirit of Davies still lives in the guesthouse. Black and white stills of her cavorting with the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant and Mary Pickford grace the walls, and window shades feature translucent scenes from her lavish, star-studded costume parties.

Although Hearst and Davies were never able to marry (Hearst’s wife Millicent refused to grant him a divorce), they were very much together until death. In the years after her death, the grand estate eventually became a hotel, and then the Sand and Sea club. Now, through a generous donation by philanthropist Wallis Annenberg, who spent time at the Sand and Sea as a young girl, it has undergone a multi-million dollar makeover to become a beach club for the public.

The pool will be open weekends through September and will re-open in May. Photo: Grant Mudford, 2009

While entry to the guesthouse is free, reservations are required for the swimming pool, which costs $10 for adults and $4 for children. Parking is $4 per hour, or $10 for the day. Be sure to make reservations well in advance as they book up quickly – and one more hint: get there before noon in order to snag one of the chaise lounges around the pool. If you’re going to summer like a 1930’s movie star, you certainly don’t want to find yourself on the hard concrete upon a soggy towel!

On a recent road trip with a girlfriend and our two sons, it took just 40 minutes from the San Fernando Valley to the Annenberg one weekday in August. For a total of $32, including parking, we were members of a beach club for a day. We languished by the enormous pool, soaking up our last rays of sun before the stress and angst of middle school begins. In addition to the historic swimming pool and guesthouse, the Beach House has volleyball and beach tennis courts, a kiddie play area and a “splash pad” – not to mention the actual beach, where you can boogie board if you get tired of the pool. And if you get hungry — and I always do — just a few steps away is Back On The Beach Cafe, which has also undergone a recent renovation, has a new chef, and is now enjoying its own revival.

Marion Davies guest house adjacent to the Beach House is open for public tours. Photo: Grant Mudford, 2009

To be honest, I’ve never thought that the food at Back on the Beach was anything to write (home or otherwise) about, always validating my long-held belief that beachside eateries are always mediocre at best. However, that afternoon, I was happily surprised by some of the best fish tacos I have eaten this side of Baja. The tacos are simple, as they should be, but perfect: lovely, moist tilapia, citrus-marinated and grilled, and served with warm corn tortillas and spicy pico de gallo, washed down with an old fashioned iced tea. Delicious. On the other hand, perhaps they were so tasty because my toes were sinking into the warm sand as I ate my lunch. It doesn’t get much better than that on a summer day, does it? After a few more hours at the Annenberg, it was time to pack up and head back home. Even though we caught a bit of traffic on the way, no one seemed to mind. After all, we were relaxed, sun-kissed and content from our day at our very own beach club.

Sandcastles in front of The Annenberg Community Beach House.
Note: The pool will be open only on weekends through September, however, the Pool House View Deck will remain open at no charge. The pool will re-open in May. It’s a fantastic spot with a spectacular ocean view – perfect to bring a book and hang out or sit and watch the sunset. The Beach House is available to rent for events and meetings.

Free cultural events and docent tours will continue (hours subject to change… most likely weekends only).

Affordable yoga classes ($10 each) will also continue through September.

The schedule for additional recreation & fitness classes beyond September is being developed and will be available by early October. The entire facility offers free WiFi access. Check the Beach House website for updates: beachhouse.smgov.net

This summer has seemingly sped by with little time for vacation or relaxation. That’s how it goes sometimes. So when I heard about the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa, I decided to take my daughter and son, who are 13 and 16, respectively, for a 24-hour getaway.

I’d never actually thought of Huntington Beach as a vacation destination, although it’s been said that it is the closest you can get to Hawaii in Southern California — and it’s only an hour drive from the San Fernando Valley.

View from the hotel room balcony.

So, off we went — with my 16-year-old new driver (of one week, no less) at the wheel. Already in the vacation mode, I took a little nap on the way as he chauffeured me and his sister on the 5 Freeway South.

Music lore has it that when Jan Berry and Dean Torrance (Jan and Dean) wrote “Surf City” with the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson in the ‘60s, little did they know that Huntington Beach would become the symbol for California Dreamin’ — wide open beaches, evening bonfires, riding the waves. And now, celebrating its 100th Anniversary, the beach town is internationally known as “Surf City, USA.”

Surf City here we come!

As we approached the resort on Pacific Coast Highway directly across from the beach, we were surprised by the enormity of its sheer size. If you’re one for big hotels, this is the place for you.

The main pool with jacuzzi grottos and a nearby poolside bar and grill.

We unloaded at the valet and brought our bags in ourselves. (Note: The valet is $25 a day and there is no other option). At the entrance we saw guests who appeared to be in an Indian wedding party as revealed by the beautiful traditional garb they donned.

The resort lobby itself features an extravagant floral display, woven rugs, and Venetian glass chandeliers. Walking in a little further to check-in, we saw many people milling around and realized that we were at very popular vacation destination.

View from the Pacific Waters Spa complete with koi pond.

This Spanish-inspired resort is filled with lush green gardens, flowers, fountains designed with mythological sea themes, a koi pond, and fire pits to roast marshmallows and s’mores (they sell ready-to-make kits with sticks for $8). Walk across the pedestrian bridge to a beach bonfire or stay at the hotel and use a pit.

We learned that it is a “go-to” wedding destination with 110,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space. We saw four weddings taking place that Saturday, including the Indian affair complete with the mandap, the wedding canopy, with flower petals decorating the ground.

Our balcony room had a view of the Pacific and was nicely appointed with a flat screen TV, a marble bath, a sitting room with a pull out couch, a table, a work desk with internet access and a king bed with luxurious linens. The kids were delighted to find plush robes and slippers in the closet. The bath amenities were good size, instead of samplers. The décor of the room was done in a palette of rich Mediterranean tones.

The fountains on the Hyatt property are all sea themes.

We wandered around and found out about all the activities. We inquired at Toes in the Nose, a surf apparel company which serves as the resort’s adventure concierge offering activities (at an extra charge) for bike and board rentals, surf lessons, stand up paddling lessons, as well as beach chair and umbrella rentals.

The Slyder Activity Pool has three slides and poolside cabanas.

We then strolled through the property and saw the very large main pool with its Jacuzzi grottos. Nearby is Mankota’s Grill, a walk-up bar/restaurant to eat poolside. The newest highlight of the resort is the four million dollar Slyder Activity Pool, complete with three water slides and surrounded by palm trees. If you want to relax with a bit of shade and privacy, check out one of the poolside cabanas that come equipped with a flat screen television and wireless internet. At a $150 rental fee, it is a luxury. Shubee’s Bar and Café is onsite for a light poolside meal.

This Indian wedding with the traditional mandap was one of four on one day.

The resort offers visitors a chance to experience the Pacific Waters Spa — a 20,000 square foot spa and fitness center with a full service menu for women, men and kids. If you are not staying at the hotel, day passes are available to enjoy the facilities. My daughter took advantage of the SophistaSpaKids pedicure and manicure with special Tahitian lotions.

That evening we ate at Pete’s Sunset Grill for the special barbecue buffet which included ribs, chicken, hot dogs, cole slaw, corn, potato salad and a variety of desserts ($19.95 adult/$12.95 children). The BBQ continues through September 5 with bands playing on Saturday nights. Pete’s is situated within a mini-shopping center which includes Surf City Grocers, Toes on the Nose, the Game Zone, HB Art Gallery and Surf City Trading Company. The Aesthetyx gift shop sits off the resort lobby and carries a variety of handcrafted items.

We didn’t get the chance to eat in The Californian which serves breakfast daily, Sunday brunch and a more upscale dinner. The Red Chair Lounge inside the main building is a sophisticated conversation and drinks area for adults.

Although, teens are too old for Camp Hyatt, it is most inviting for families with kids ages 3 to 12, so parents can get a little adult time. There is an extra cost of $45-$80 per day depending on if it is a half or full day.

So, for me and my two teens, it was a relaxing getaway. As we were leaving, my daughter commented that it seemed like we were there longer than a day

I guess stealing away for 24 hours is indeed a vacation after all.

Everyone loves a road trip. In my college years, the words alone (Road Trip!) were a devilish challenge, setting my friends and I off on a spontaneous, late-night car trip to some other college town an hour or so away… or once I moved to California, to Vegas. As I got older, my road trips evolved into romantic weekends in Big Sur, solo getaways to Cambria, and family adventures in La Jolla.

The one thing weaving them all together – aside from the car – was food. I’m not talking about the Pringles or Corn-Nuts we munched during the road trip, but the destination meal, the one you look forward to at your journey’s end. Even back in Oklahoma, those midnight jaunts to Norman always culminated with a “Denco Darling,” a (rather vile, if memory serves) hangover concoction of eggs, Green Goddess dressing, chips and pasta, served at a landmark diner by a famously surly waitress named Pat.

Thankfully, my road trips and taste buds evolved, and the adventures began to involve cuisine that was actually worth driving for… La Super Rica Taqueria’s Taco de Rajas that melted in our mouths in Santa Barbara, the best veggie burger in the world in La Jolla, or the melt-in-your-mouth scone and Mexican Hot Chocolate at the French Corner Bakery in Cambria. For what is a road trip without food?

When Publisher/Editor Karen Young suggested I write something for MyDailyFind.com, I agreed, only if I could combine my two loves: travel and food. The road trips I will write about in this column may be minutes or hours away, but they will always involve something delicious. My motto? Will drive for food. I hope you will come along…

ROAD TRIP! LOS OLIVOS AND THE SANTA YNEZ VALLEY

It had been a while since my husband Paul and I were away on our own. My son’s fifth grade “field trip” to Washington, D.C. just happened to coincide with our wedding anniversary, so Paul took it upon himself to book us into an inn in Los Olivos. I was so shocked that he had actually made the arrangements himself, that I didn’t dare change a thing… well almost. I did suggest one thing: a restaurant called Trattoria Grappolo in nearby Santa Ynez, which I had heard good things about.

La Super Rica, a taco stand in Santa Barbara, made famous by Julia Child.

From the San Fernando Valley, the Santa Ynez Valley is about two hours away, but if you are wise, you’ll build in some time for a quick lunch at La Super Rica Taqueria, my favorite taco stand in Santa Barbara (the same one Julia Child made famous years ago with a single recommendation). You haven’t lived until you’ve tasted their Taco de Rajas, two paper-thin, hand-made corn tortillas piled with creamy caramelized onions and roasted chile strips… or the fresh tamale with fresh corn, zucchini and warm Mexican crema… all washed down with an icy Horchata or cold beer. But I digress. We are headed to the wine country.

Solvang

A little farther toward Los Olivos, we can’t help making a quick pit stop in the Danish town of Solvang to check out the cheesy souvenirs and those puffy pancakes everyone is eating on the street. We pass on the pancakes, but I consider a pair of cute clogs that just don’t fit the way they should for the price.

I wish I could tell you about the curious miniature horses that graze at the Quicksilver Horse Farm just outside of Solvang, but Paul is driving and he’s making no more stops. For the record, if you are up here with your kids, there is no way you are not stopping to at least check out these adorable creatures, which from the highway, look a little larger than our Irish Setter.

Special packages at Fess Parker's Inn & Spa often include breakfast at Petros downstairs. Photo: Karen Young

The town of Los Olivos is small and charming, though a closer look reveals that there is not much to do here but taste wine and go to art galleries. Poor us. We check into our lovely room at Fess Parker’s Inn & Spa before heading out to check out our surroundings. As this trip wasn’t so much about wine tasting as it was about us having a day away, we only went to a few tasting rooms, both included in the price of our room. Our first stop was the Epiphany Cellars, owned by Eli Parker in town, where the Rodney’s Vineyard Petite Sirah and dark chocolate combination took the prize (how could it not?), but where the wine consultant was not nearly as chummy as Virginia Madsen and Sandra Oh in “Sideways” (sorry, guys).

Over 60 vineyards cover the run across the Santa Ynez Valley. Photo: Karen Young

I much preferred venturing out into the golden hills of the wine route, past old oaks, to the picturesque Fess Parker’s Winery. The Pommard Clone Pinot Noir took my taste buds straight back to Burgundy, but the wine consultant snatched away our would-be keepsake glasses when he realized we were guests of the hotel… free wine, sure, but free glasses, no way. We could have continued down the road to over 60 wineries, but we opted for a before-dinner nap instead, dozing lazily as we listen to laughter floating up from Petros, the chic Greek restaurant below us.

Trattoria Grappolo owners (L-R) Leonardo Curti and Daniele Serra Photo: Trattoria Grappolo

We get lost on the way to Trattoria Grappolo, but the casual Italian restaurant isn’t the kind of place that is going to give away your reservation… it’s very relaxed here. The waiter brings us some bread and olive oil, explaining that he made the olive oil himself. You can still see little flecks of olive flesh in the oil, and it is delicious. This is the kind of thing that puts me over the edge, and I am happy. We order a few glasses of wine and order what our waiter proclaims to be the best choices… in fact, he tells us, “you are about to taste the best pizza of your life.”

In the end, it’s not the best pizza we’ve ever had (that would still have to be that little place outside of Siena we still talk about), but it is wonderful, thin and crispy, and covered with molten hot mozzarella cheese, among other things. My linguini with clams is also a hit, and we end our meal with a delicious Panna Cotta with caramel and chocolate sauce before calling it a night.

The smell of lavender breezes through the Santa Ynez countryside. Photo: Karen Young

The next morning, we indulge in the perfect chaser breakfast at Petros downstairs from our room – an omelet for Paul and homemade yogurt with local honey for me, all included in our rate at the Fess Parker’s Inn and Spa. Before heading home the next day, we stop at a local Lavender Farm where I buy some lavender sea salt, lavender honey and some soap. On our way back to LA, we fantasize about someday retiring with our own lavender farm… We used to talk about retiring in Italy, but with such good wine and olive oil so close, why bother?

BY JENNIFER EVANS GARDNER

The history of spas goes way back to ancient times, when people “took the waters” for their health. In the seventies, when destination spas began popping up in the U.S., they were largely (pun intended) known as “Fat Farms,” places where lucky rich women went to lose weight. Rigorous exercise was key, as was starvation, with minimal calories per day doled out in the form of plain broiled chicken breasts and soggy broccoli. Oh sure, you could get a massage or body scrub as a reward for your suffering and growling tummy, but let’s face it — food wasn’t exactly the focus.

Over the years, that has all changed with the introduction of gourmet spa cuisine. Today, spas usually offer delicious meals prepared from the healthiest organic produce, the goal being to get you on the right track in terms of your diet. Which is all fine and good while you’re at the spa. But what happens when you get home and you have no idea how to prepare all that gorgeous, gourmet spa cuisine? Will you go back to cooking the same old fattening meals for yourself and your family? After all, you don’t get to take the spa chef home with you… or do you?

Enter the spa cooking school. Nowadays, spas aren’t just leading their guests to healthy cuisine – they appear to be taking it one step further by teaching them how to COOK healthy – so they can continue to reap the benefits of a healthy lifestyle at home.

At spas such as Canyon Ranch, chefs work with nutritionists to develop recipes, which they both serve in their restaurants, and share with their guests/students. Other spas, such as Rancho La Puerta and Lake Austin Spa, get their guests involved in picking out fresh organic produce; at Rancho La Puerta, this means going to the on-site farm; at Lake Austin, guests are driven to the local flagship Whole Foods Market for a demonstration.

Classes offered may be hands-on, demonstration only, or both. At Canyon Ranch, instructing chef Sean Brisby even hands out parting gifts, such as top quality measuring cups and spoons, along with copies of healthy recipes. In general, spa cooking classes range from those focusing on low calorie entrees or desserts, to seasonal (holiday cooking), to multi-cultural cuisine; for example, Rancho La Puerta’s La Cocina Que Canta, (the kitchen that sings) will honor its Mexican heritage with a focus on Mexican/Mediterranean cooking, while classes at the Inn at Coyote Mountain in Costa Rica focuses on Latin and Creole fare. Ultimately, while spas have always been where people have gone for pampering, health, and peace of mind, now they have given us another delicious dimension.

The following are some of the many spa cooking schools/classes cropping up:
