Nearly 100 local volunteers converged on Ventura Boulevard between Hazeltine and Van Nuys Boulevard last month as part of a massive clean up event organized by the Sherman Oaks Beautification Committee in partnership with Big Sunday and the Mayor’s Day of Service.
Students from seven neighboring schools took part in the event, including Harvard Westlake, Buckley, Van Nuys Middle School, Champs Charter, Burton Elementary, SOCES, Bishop Alemany, and Oakwood School. Additional volunteers signed up via the Big Sunday website and some local residents and businesses joined the effort, which was a tremendous success.
Councilmember Wendy Greuel spoke to the volunteers before they embarked on their cleanup and congratulated the Sherman Oaks Beautification Committee for their longstanding commitment.
The volunteers enjoyed refreshments provided by Big Sunday, Western Bagel at Coldwater, the Coffee Roaster, Ralph’s Market at Hazeltine and Whole Foods. The Office of Community Beautification provided tools and Sherman Oaks Hospital donated gloves and wipes. New Directions for Youth sent a group of hard workers to help clean and to paint out graffiti.
Leslie Elkan is President of the Sherman Oaks Business Improvement District and co-chair of the Sherman Oaks Beautification Committee. The next clean-up event is scheduled for Saturday, October 10.
