Former City Council Member Wendy Greuel is now officially City Controller of the City of Los Angeles, replacing Laura Chick in the role of the City’s “fiscal watch dog.”

In an Inaugural address at Los Angeles City Hall on July 1, Greuel pledged to “root out waste, fraud and abuse in our government, wherever it may be, and to ensure that every taxpayer dollar is spent responsibly and effectively.”

In her speech titled “Back to Basics,” she made clear that her first order of business will be to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the “financial health of the city,” which will include conducting fiscal and performance audits of city departments and programs in order to uncover the waste and inefficiencies she said are contributing to the current budget crisis in Los Angeles.

This statement challenges a recent judge’s ruling that blocks her office from auditing programs run by her fellow elected officials, which includes the Mayor, City Attorney and Council Members. Greuel promised that she would go to the voters with a ballot measure if necessary. Former City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo had fought Laura Chick over her right to audit programs in his office.

Newly elected City Attorney Carmen Trutanich has already agreed to a program audit of his office. Both Greuel and Trutanich say they believe in “transparency in government” as a tool for affecting change in government.

Greuel’s council seat in District 2 (representing the areas of Lake View Terrace, La Tuna Canyon, North Hollywood, Shadow Hills, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Sunland, Sun Valley, Tujunga, Valley Village, Valley Glen and Van Nuys) remains vacant with a Special Election set for September 22, however the office will remain open to address community concerns.
