I drove by Pink Cheeks Salon in Sherman Oaks the other day and saw their giant banner — WE WAXED BRUNO!!! See it in the Movie!!! Although I didn’t see the movie, I must say I was intrigued.

I went home and checked out the Pink Cheeks website. Honestly,   just reading the detailed descriptions of their services made me blush. However, for the sake of journalism (and my curiosity), I made an appointment with the owner to talk about bikini waxes and “Bruno.”

“Where there’s hair, we’re there,” claims Pink Cheeks owner Cindy Esser-Thorin. And she should know—she’s waxed everyone from Megan Fox and Janet Jackson to Sandra Bullock and Pamela Anderson, with lots of regular folks in between.

Women and men flock to Pink Cheeks Salon  for the most discreet, most popular and most unique bikini waxes in L.A. In this location for 12 years and licensed as an aesthetician for 26 years, Cindy has seen it all, literally! This warm, gracious and witty woman told me most of her services started with a customer’s suggestion. I won’t name the celebrities, but many famous people’s intimate requests are now part of Cindy’s everyday services.

Pink Cheeks offers an array of beauty options including seven different bikini waxes (the Pseudo, Thumbprint, and Mystique to name a few), facials, tinting and bleaching services (let your imagination wander on that).

Cindy Esser-Thorin says it's funny how so many people request to "feel the bed" where "Bruno" got waxed.

Cindy and her four technicians use top-quality, refined spun-honeybee wax and 100% Egyptian cotton muslin removing cloths. Clients come from all over the world for a Pink Cheeks’ treatment. Recently a client asked Cindy, “If I take the red eye (from New York) can you wax me in the morning?”

Cindy then happily told me the story of “Bruno.”

Months ago, Cindy received a call from producers at an Austrian TV channel which wanted to do a story about male waxing (for the sake of this family friendly site, let’s just say it concerns being as smooth as the day one is born…or, pink cheeks, literally!).

They said they would be sending an Austrian model and made an evening appointment with Cindy, who had been working from six o’clock that morning. The TV crew came in about 7 p.m. for a 7:30 p.m. appointment.  However, the ‘model’ didn’t arrive until after 9 p.m.

Cindy described the model as the most flamboyant, handsome and arrogant customer she’d ever met. He ignored her handshake and talked on the phone during the waxing. She signed the release to allow the segment to be shown in Austria and went about her business.

Much to Cindy’s surprise,  a client called to say she just saw Cindy and Pink Cheeks in a movie.  Cindy had no idea what this client was talking about, so she went to see “Bruno” that night and was stunned that her Austrian model client was none other than Sacha Baron-Cohen.

Since the film’s release July 10, Cindy and her services have been more popular than ever. She thinks the whole thing is “super funny,”  as clients have come into the waxing room wanting to “touch the bed” where Bruno got waxed.

During this visit to Pink Cheeks, I learned it’s true that while some treatments are highly personal and might be a bit embarrassing, the staff is very professional and the atmosphere is very cozy, plus Cindy told me she can get the job done within ten minutes! I might just get up the nerve to visit Pink Cheeks a second time.

There’s parking in the public structure in back as well as metered parking on Ventura.

Pink Cheeks is located at 14562 Ventura Blvd. Sherman Oaks, CA 91403 (818) 783-9380 Closed Mondays. Open as early as 6:30 am.
