Volunteers from schools and businesses in Sherman Oaks and neighboring areas converged on Ventura Boulevard at Ventura Canyon last Saturday, October 10, and fanned out to embark on an ambitious cleanup of the Boulevard.

The Sherman Oaks Beautification Committee, which is comprised of the Village at Sherman Oaks Business Improvement District, the Sherman Oaks Chamber of Commerce, the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association, the Sherman Oaks Rotary Club Sunset and representatives of Council District Offices 2 and 5, organized the event and received tools and a graffiti fighting team from the Office of Community Beautification.

Coffee was donated by the Coffee Roaster, and other supplies, including water and snacks were donated by Sherman Oaks Hospital, Costco Van Nuys, and The Buckley School.  Western Bagel in Studio City contributed  bagels and Whole Foods Sherman Oaks gave the cream cheese.

Hardworking students from The Buckley School, Champs Charter High School, Sherman Oaks Elementary School, Van Nuys Middle School, Oakwood School, California State University at Northridge and Notre Dame High School picked up and disposed of cigarette butts, trash and debris, raked leaves and swept gutters and sidewalks.  The area was visibly cleaner and fresher at the end of the event and the volunteers left feeling  happy, tired and accomplished.  Each earned 2 1/2 hours of community service credit for their efforts.

Leslie Elkan is President of the Sherman Oaks Business Improvement District and co-chair of the Sherman Oaks Beautification Committee. The next clean-up event is scheduled for Saturday, October 10. For questions about the Sherman Oaks Beautification Committee, please email, or call 818-326-0273.
