Dr. Phil’s fitness and nutritional guru is in the 818 and he’s hanging his shingle at North Hollywood’s The Studio Loft four days a week with his Permanent Weight Loss program.

Robert Reames is the man whom Dr. Phil McGraw and his wife, Robin, tout as “the best of the best.” He began working as their trainer and was asked to join the show in its second season.

Now in his seventh season as the head trainer and nutritionist for Dr. Phil’s Ultimate Weight Loss Race, Reames is taking the $55 million dollar diet industry to task with the notion that diets don’t work— with his own fitness and nutrition program — Robert Reames Lifestyle Transformation System, and a book, Make Over Your Metabolism. He’s also a spokesperson for Gold’s Gym.

“It’s all about changing your lifestyle — there’s the big four—exercise, nutrition, proper rest and stress management,” said Reames, who’s had 20 years experience in fitness and is also a certified nutritionist.

“I get that ‘life happens’ and that all four aren’t achievable, but at least start by trying to achieve one at a time.”

This Sunday, November 15, from 1 to 2 pm, Reames is going to share his lifestyle philosophy in a free one hour seminar at The Studio Loft where he will give a nutrition overview, share examples of sample meals highlighting healthy recipes, and talk about the real life aspects noted above that are needed for optimum health.

Reames, who possesses a very “every (wo) man” approach, can be found four days a week at The Studio Loft, clad in his daily exercise uniform of baggy cargo pants and long sleeve “RR” logo tee with another tee underneath, leading a small group of women (and sometimes men) of varying ages, shapes and sizes in an hour of strength, cardio and interval training using balls and bands. Two sessions a week focus on the upper body and the other two are about the lower body.

“I’m doing personal training in a group setting,” says Reames, whose upbeat manner and boundless energy motivates the members of his groups to keep up the regime.

Santa Monica resident Alice Manning, a 45 year old mother with four kids, has worked out with Reames for two years and drives the distance four times a week.  ”After years of unhealthy dieting, I met Robert and my life changed. He taught me the real way to eat, sleep, exercise and lower my stress. I lost 26 pounds in my first eight weeks working with him and have kept it off for two years now. I used to feel so exhausted all the time. I have so much energy now. I feel healthy and strong and that is everything to me.”

Reames can relate to weight and health troubles. “I’m America. I was raised in a small town in northern Indiana….as a kid I was 4’11” tall and 150 pounds. I get it.”

Sally Schaub, a statuesque blonde,  said she signed up five months ago with a goal of losing 10 pounds. “I did not know that with a healthy workout regime and a good relationship with food, and combining the right foods, that I would lose 23 pounds and 20 inches and go from a size 10 to a size 4,” stated Schaub. “What a fantastic surprise. Robert has taught me I can be in control of how I look and feel. At 64, I am in the best shape of my life. Just in time for my high school reunion.”

Sarah Barrett, 42, a Studio City mother of two young children (and coincidentally a My Daily Find with her company SarahBears Cards and Creations)   has been working out with Reames for eight weeks. “Even in such a short time, I’ve managed to change the way my body looks,” said Barrett. “I’ve dropped 10 pounds and 8 inches…mostly off my middle. People have noticed the change and that feels great. Robert is everything you want in a trainer. He pushes you to be stronger and better without the “Biggest Loser” screaming tactics,” she quipped. “He is caring and supportive with just the right amount of toughness. He is also teaching a lifestyle, rather than a diet. He is helping me stay on track and be the best I can be for myself, as well as for my family.”

Janine Silverman, owner of The Studio Loft, said she met Reames when he brought his daughter to a karate class and welcomed him to run his program at her unique studio, where she has two studio rooms that she rents out by  the hour.

“Robert is perfect for The Studio Loft because he pulls together everything we do here — fitness, stretching, pilates, dance—with his knowledge of nutrition,” said Silverman, who is a certified Yoga-Fit instructor, which mixes traditional yoga poses with fitness and is described as “more like a cardio-power yoga.”

In addition to Reames’ program and Silverman’s yoga classes, The Studio Loft offers other classes for kids and adults, including Martial Arts, Active Yoga, Mat Pilates, Kor-Body (a mix of pilates, yoga, stretching), Curves in Motion (an adult hip hop dance class taught by Pinky, the first runner up on Oxygen’s “Dance Your Ass Off”) and a lyrical dance class (8-12 year olds).

Reames said he really enjoys holding his classes at The Studio Loft because it’s such a calm environment and because it has the feel of exercising in your own home.

So, instead of doing workouts by  video or  getting advice from Robert Reames on TV, you can work out with him live four days week — or even try some other offered classes to up the ante.

As both Silverman and Reames agree, “just showing up is a start.”
