The 13th Annual Big Sunday Weekend is back May 14 and May 15. There are over 500 different projects from Solvang to San Diego, with most in Los Angeles County, making the weekend the largest community service regional event in the nation. Over 50, 000 people are expected to participate.

Founded as Mitzvah Day in 1999 at Temple Israel of Hollywood by David Levinson as a single day of service with 200 volunteers at 19 non-profits, Big Sunday has grown into a weekend event every May. In addition, there are volunteer opportunities during the holiday season as well as throughout the year.

Executive Director Levinson was named Non-Profit Leader of the Year as part of the 2009 National Conference on Volunteering and Service which was awarded by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shiver.

There’s too many  events to include here, so check out the list on the Big Sunday website. Just enter the geographic area where you’d like to volunteer and the age of volunteers to find a project of interest. T-Shirts and snacks are provided at every site.

Also, as part of the 13th annual Big Sunday Weekend, Big Sunday will present its first-ever Pitch in, Rock out, Give back! benefit concert on Sunday, May 15th at 6 pm at the Echoplex. The benefit concert is free for any Big Sunday volunteer wearing their Big Sunday t-shirt. For everyone else there is a suggested donation of just $5. The line-up features some favorite local bands: The Chapin Sisters, Happy Hollows, Incan Abraham, and Everest. All door proceeds will benefit Harmony Project, an LA non-profit dedicated to music education for children who otherwise would not have access to it.
