Tasty Tidbits: What's Happening in the 818's Restaurant Scene

Spark Woodfire Grill in Studio City has added Saturday and Sunday brunch to its meal repertoire from 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. both days. Choose from standard breakast fare to more creative dishes such as homemade cinnamon rolls, salmon hash with poached eggs, spinach and goat cheese omelette and a traditional eggs benedict. The real deal is the $5.95 Bottomless Mimosa with freshly squeezed OJ.

MDF fave, Studio City’s Pepe’s NY Pizza, recently opened its second location around the bend toward Universal City in the Lankershim/Ventura strip mall. Get it by the slice or the pie. The pizza is super thin and the eggplant pizza is a must-try. There’s salads, sandwiches and pastas too. 11946 Ventura Blvd. (818-358-2233) and 10604 Ventura Blvd. (818-762-2335).

More “over the hill—L.A. way” restaurant talent is staking claim in the 818. The owners of Allora Cucina Italiana on West Third Street in Los Angeles are opening Ancora Cucina Italiana in La Finestra’s old digs in Tarzana.  Look for this new eatery to open in the next couple of weeks. Prohibition Burger & Beer owner Alex Chernavsky says they’ve been rolling out some big changes and will continue in the coming weeks at this Tarzana eatery. Look for lower prices on select items, such as some $9.50 burgers and $8 Grilled Cheese Trio; 2.5 L beer barrels are being served instead of the traditional pitcher, $13 beer flights comes with an appetizer during Happy Hour from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. every weekday. New beers recently introduced include Prohibition Ale, Big Daddy IPA , Racer 5, Fox Barrel Hard Cider, Old Rasputin and five Signature Beer cocktails. New menu items include Calamari, a Special Burger of the Day, Potato Skins and a new Chicken Burger.

Also in Tarzana, The Town Restaurant just opened a few blocks west of Reseda, at 18608 1/2 Ventura Blvd.  The Town is owned by Sonia Gregorian who owns Jumpin’ Java in Studio City. The look is far different than Studio City. Gone is small town charm, but the menu is similar. It’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner— Sunday and Monday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The breakfast menu is enormous with eggs every which way, crepes, waffles, pancakes, breakfast sandwiches, and more. Salads, burgers, sandwiches, pastas and a variety of entrees, many with European and Mediterranean influences fill out the eclectic menu.

If you like to dance, are a fan of Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop, and into Facebook, this one might be for you. Upload a 35 second video of yourself doing a “Cappy Dance” on the Facebook application through September 21 — that means what you look like when you get really excited visiting Capriotti’s. Facebook fans will have until October 3 to vote on their favorite video. Winners will be announced on October 5. Prizes include a free small sandwich for all participants who entered a video and five runner ups will be awarded a free-subs-for-a-year prize. The grand prize for the best Cappy dance will be “35 Years of Free Capriotti’s Subs” for the lucky winner. “Like” Capriotti’s on Facebook and find out how to enter.

Another Broken Egg Cafe is continuing its homestyle trek across the country. Its 17th venture opened in Burbank a couple months ago, serving up breakfast, brunch and lunch. The rather large menu offers 130 choices with variations of eggs, benedects, pancakes, waffles, burgers, wraps, salads and more. There’s Blood Marys and fresh fruit Martinis too! 250 E. Mamma Mia! Maggiano’s Little Italy® just introduced their “Marco’s Menu For Two” – a fixed-price, chef-inspired, three-course menu all for $39.95. Choose from any appetizer, flatbread or two side salads; two pastas; and dessert. Plus, take home two more classic pastas complements of the chef!

The legendary Papoo’s Hot Dog Show, with its vintage signs and juke box, on Riverside Drive in Toluca Lake, took its final bow this week after 62 years.  Word on the street is that an Italian restaurant will be built in its place.
