The darkness at Oak Fire in Sherman Oaks may be lifted soon. A permit has been filed for a “general eating place” called Dixie Tavern. No word on the particulars.   Also in the works…another eatery at 4351 Woodman (between Ventura and Moorpark).  A permit was filed  for the Garden Bakery Cafe.  Stay tuned here for further details.

Also in Sherman Oaks, Sweet Harts, which was founded by Melissa Joan Hart, will have their grand re-opening under new ownership this Saturday, March 3. The free fun goes from 11 a.m. — 9 p.m. with an all day Bouncey House; 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sweet Harts bakery samples, including Xtreme Desserts with sweet samples and a red velvet cookie cake raffle; 11-12:30 Nails by Little Rock Star Hair Salon; 1 – 3 p.m. Toffee and brownie samples; 1 :30-4:30 Face Painting, 3 -5 p.m. Hear about their fro yo and new flavors; 5 – 7 p.m. Henna tattoos; 5-7 p.m. ; Jenny Rae visits with her Lil’ Rae Cakes. Buy 1 get 1 free to the first 25 customers at the start of her hour…and from 7 p.m. -9 p.m. new owner Jarrett Lesko and his bluegrass band performs.

Republic of Pie recently opened in Noho and is staking its claim for all things pie,  serving up a variety of sweet and savory pies along with fresh coffee. Part coffee house, part eatery, this non-traditional pie shop is a place to sit down and relax.

Local winemaker Shawn Shai Halahmy of Shai Cellars and Chef Ian Jerde are uniting for a three course wine dinner hosted by Amelia Yokel at Fab’s in Sherman Oaks on March 21 at 6 p.m. The First Course presents 2009 Grenache paired with an arugula and fennel salad, garnished with oranges and duck confit. For the Second Course enjoy a 2008 Adome paired with Spicy leg of lamb, mushroom risotto and spaghetti squash. The Third Course presents a 2009 Adome paired with glazed chocolate short ribs, creamy polenta and a medley of seasonal vegetables. $65 per person $110 per couple. 818-995-2933.  Please call Tuesday through Sunday after 5 p.m. for reservations.

Trek out to to Old Pasadena for Happy Hour Week  March 1-15. It will showcase Old Pasadena’s finest restaurants, bars and lounges, offering extended food and drink specials—from $1 martinis and $2 beers to $3 gourmet sushi and appetizers. Various restaurants and venues will also host special free musical performances by popular local world, ecelectic pop and jazz performers.

Lady Face Ale in Agoura is giving a tour of its microbrewery on Monday, March 4 at 5:30 p.m. Get the inside scoop on hops and barley. Sip your pint as you listen to Brewmaster David Griffiths’ technical explanation of the beer-making process. Q&A to follow. (Always on the first Monday of every month.)
