Chef Kazunomi Nozawa closed the doors of his infamous Studio City restaurant, Sushi Nozawa, on February 29, but the legacy continues with SUGARFISH which quietly opened its doors on May 17. Although Nozawa said he is retiring, SUGARFISH is part of a restaurant group co-owned by Nozawa, his son, Tom Nozawa, and four other partners. Studio City will be the fifth SUGARFISH location. Others are in Brentwood, Santa Monica, Downtown Los Angeles and Marina Del Rey. Diners choose from three core menus called Trust Me, a takeoff from the traditional Japanese omakase. The biggest change is there are no visible sushi chefs behind a sushi bar as everything is quickly made in the kitchen. There’s no fancy rolls — just pure sushi nigiri and limited sashimi– and strict suggestions that you shouldn’t dip anything in soy sauce if there is already a sauce. You can also order a la carte. For more detailed menu information, go to the website. Beer, sake and white wine are available. Takeout and catering too.

Also, at Tony’s, on Sunday, May 27th, they’ll host their inaugural Books and Brews from 6-9pm, a program designed to showcase regional food authors and pair their creations with excellent beer. For this event, Chef Randal St. Clair will team up with one of my favorite food writers, Randy Clemens, author of The Sriracha Cookbook, to discuss their mutual love of ‘rooster sauce’ and sample a menu of Sriracha-enhanced vegan and non-vegan items (pulled pork sliders, potato salad, deviled eggs and more) paired with some excellent beer.
