Actress Wendie Jo Sperber left a tremendous legacy with WeSPARK when she died in 2005 at the age of 47 after an eight year battle with breast cancer.  She created a warm, home-like environment where cancer patients and their families and friends can come for free support services that include classes and support groups for all ages.

Since its inception in 2001, WeSPARK, which is located in Sherman Oaks, has been a source of comfort and information for tens of thousands of people, including Anton Maillie, who founded the annual weSPARK 10K Run & 5K Run/Walk four years ago . This year, the event will take place at the Universal Studios backlot on November 4 — and is now open for registration.

Mark L. Walberg (host of Antique Roadshow) is set to host this unique athletic competition that’s open to all ages and levels of fitness. The 10K & 5K courses have their paths marked past legendary movie sets from JawsPsycho House, and War of the Worlds, as well as backdrops such as New York Street and Spartacus Square. In addition, the family-friendly event includes an expo featuring walk-around characters, face painting, live musical acts, and a delicious array of gourmet food trucks.

Anton Maillie, who is an avid runner and television producer,  created this event to help further the mission provided by weSPARK.  He was inspired by using weSPARK’s services after losing his mom to cancer.  Through his experience, he recognized the value the center offers the community.  He wanted to do something where he could give back, so he combined all his talents and love of the organization and created the Run/Walk event.

Walk or run for an amazing cause.

“Our mission is to offer an open and inclusive event that mirrors the spirit of the weSPARK organization,” said Maillie, who is also a member of weSPARK Board of Directors. “There is something for everyone – from the serious runner seeking a unique destination run, to the local family looking for a fun and meaningful way to spend a Sunday morning.”

Actress Nancy Allen, who is Executive Director of WeSPARK  further adds, “This is our event where everyone gets an opportunity to participate. It’s a joy to see the diversity of the participants who turn out to support family, friends, and our organization. The funds raised through this event allow us to continue offering free services that help lessen the pain and stress of those who are affected by cancer.”

Fun for all ages!
