UPCOMING NEXT WEEK:

CALLING ALL HEROES! CALLING ALL SCOUTS! 5K RACES AT WOODLEY PARK ON DECEMBER 1.  SHERMAN OAKS -- They are the people that make our lives better and safer. They are our “everyday heroes:” teachers and students; firefighters and police officers; nurses and doctors; moms and dads. Boy Scout Troop 139 is honoring these heroes by hosting its first-ever HEROES CHALLENGE fundraiser, a 5-kilometer (3.1 mile) run around beautiful Lake Balboa on Saturday, December 1. The race is open to all – the everyday heroes and those who want to honor them by running and being a healthy example to others. The race will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at Woodley Park in Van Nuys, just south of Victory Boulevard. Runners will assemble at the underpass, loop around Lake Balboa and finish at the park. Troop 139 is recruiting runners from hundreds of schools, firehouses, police stations and hospitals. Teams can register in groups of four (or five, for the same price), and individual runners are also welcome. Ribbons and medals will be awarded to both individuals and teams of runners in several categories, including Best Overall, Best Team, Best School, Best Firehouse, etc. Following the HEROES CHALLENGE, Troop 139 is enlisting Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to run in the second race that morning, the RUN FOR THE EAGLE, kicking off at 9:45 a.m. Ribbons and medals will be awarded to the fastest scout teams, as well as individual scouts by age. Race registration is just $30 per runner, or $120 for a team of four (or five) people. Register for the event at the website active.com, keyword TROOP 139, or you can go to the link http://www.active.com/5k-race/van-nuys-ca/troop-139-heroes-challenge-run-for-the-eagle-2012. Day-of registration begins at 7:00 a.m. and is $35 per runner or $140 per team. Proceeds from the race will benefit Troop 139, the Boy Scout Council of Greater Los Angeles, and the Valley Food Bank. One of the oldest scout troops in the San Fernando Valley, Troop 139 recently celebrated its 60th anniversary. More than 160 of the troop’s scouts have earned the rank of Eagle Scout and as adults have become
successful community leaders. The troop is sponsored by St. Francis De Sales Parish in Sherman Oaks.
