The San Fernando Valley Master Chorale (SFVMC) presents “Lord Have Mercy – A cry for help in a time of need,” a selection of masterworks in a resonant space. Conducted by SFVMC Artistic Director Charlie Kim, the concert will include choral favorites by Mozart, Fauré, Moses Hogan spirituals, and the premiere of a new piece by SFVMC composer-in-residence, Sergio Barer.

The text “Lord, have mercy” has long existed across time and several cultures as an exclamation used in times when the situation seems so dire the only place to look for help is from above. The San Fernando Valley Master Chorale presents a collection of music from two very different choral traditions: the African-American spirituals, and the Kyrie movements from the iconic musical settings of funeral rites of the Western church. Though the styles are starkly contrasting, the text is the same – “Lord, have mercy.” The two musical styles presented together create a powerfully moving cry for help in a time of need that transcends all differences, and focuses on the sense of unity that only art seems able to foster. Join us for a musical evening of healing in the midst of all the pain.
